Yet another bad experience with a host...Pls help

Do many of you wheel your luggage over spits and dirt outside, bring it inside and put it on a sofa or a bed??? I do not think that I have OCD! I just have a common sense.

Sponges on a trip? Marina, yeah you got a touch of OCD, so do a lot of us, maybe not with sponges. True OCD is like my friends, the wife travels with a small vacuum cleaner!

We are close to number of countries traveled. I am going in April to a country #43:) and no sponges.
What common sense for us is not common sense for others. After hosts share here what different nations do during their stay, it’s obvious we are not all equal. Of course dragging luggage over gross things and then put it on a bed is not what you and me do, but many many guests did it in my house. As I said I don’t like it but seeing how many did it I just do extra laundry from time to time.
I came to US many years ago and first thing that I noticed is how people throw everything on a floor. Now 26 years later I still raise my eyebrows every time I pass a guest’s room and see all floor covered with clothes.
People who notice what other people don’t , who have an eye on all the spots and imperfections must have the most difficult time hosting

YES, it is very difficult for me to see something that I do not do by my self. I guess, I am not so flexible, I moved to this country only 15 years ago and still difficult to see that Americans walk over gross outside and do not take off footwear when they get inside.

Not sponges  just a sponge  one
I do not like to wash dishes with cloth. And in a poor country you get a cloth at a sink. brrrrrr

Just having fun with yas. Makes total sense really, it is not to be found in some places, and takes no room in a suitcase. My ‘travel-with-a-vacuum-cleaner’ friends are coming next week, it is a hoot having them come visit and we have great laughs about her OCD.

Another odd thing - I take on my trips wine glasses, 2 of them and made of glass. I am a wine specialist. I just go though my trip with my wine glasses and at a last place I just leave them there. It became for me as a tradition. I love wine, I like to drink wine from wine glasses and clean glasses. I have left my wine glasses on all 6 continents.

Hehe. Just wondering if you don’t eat out in your regular at home life, does it go to travels also?

@Marina, your methods are just plain interesting.

This is an interesting topic; I wonder if the host is on here and wants to shed some light on her side of events…

I charge a cleaning fee and plenty of people leave the house messy. One group left cigarette butts and ash all over the balcony. Was I miffed? Yes. Did I charge them extra? Of course not. It was covered by the cleaning fee. I picked up the butts and hosed down the balcony. No biggie. Also looked at your photos and can see no damage. And her slippers? Looks like something from KMart for five bucks. Don’t sweat it - you’ve done nothing wrong x

I’m with Katy here. Plus, I highly doubt that any host that Katy books with in the future will find this thread. As a host myself, I would actually want Katy as a guest. She seems reasonable. The one criticism I have is that I would have communicated more with the host before you left about the trash/mess on the balcony. (Maybe you did. I’m skimming this thread a bit.)

The worst guests I ever had left trash everywhere, used condom on the floor, mugs with tea bags basically cemented to the bottom, and even kind of broke a window shade. I was disgusted and annoyed but didn’t charge them anything, because that’s what the cleaning fee is for. I left them a terrible review, but because of other factors that had to do with house rules, trust and safety, etc.

Omg that’s gross!!! Did you file a extra cleaning fee ?

No, I didn’t. I just charged our standard fee. It was gross, but it
doesn’t cost anything extra to just put on a rubber glove (no pun
intended) and use some paper towels and throw it in the trash. I wrote a
calm, unemotional bad review (my one and only ever) and gave Airbnb
feedback about the guest.

What extra fee? For what, grossness?? :joy:

I’d rather scoop up a used condom than deal with a nasty toilet.

Hey Guys! So I finally got the long awaited conclusion. On Friday, I received an email from AirBnB to explain my point of view. I wrote a detailed message - a pretty long one. Today, I exchanged several emails with their representative and even though they charged my card for $158 at first, an hour later I received a refund I did not expect at all. I got an email right after that their manager reviewed all of our conversation and pictures again and that they agree I was being taken an advantage of. I am so happy all of this is behind me. I am being a guest this upcoming weekend and will make sure I clean extra hard before I leave. Thanks everyone for such a great feedback and keeping me sane while I had to face all of this.

thank you! You are right though, I should have communicated better about the trash. I always write a message to all of my hosts right after I get home. This time, I have not had a chance to. I will make sure I start being more careful and communicate better.

I think you meant to say “that SOME Americans…do not take off footwear…” Many of my friends do. We do.
