This is a well known and discussed issue that as far as I can tell will never be resolved. Airbnb doesn’t care.
I just happened to be looking at my calendar, abd there are 5 days blocked out in May. When I click on it, I can see the guest’s info and he has a positive review, but I have not gotten a request or an alert about an instant booking, abd it says status is pending. Is this a glitch? Do I need to call Airbnb or am I just waiting for something to happen- maybe payment?
Edit: just kidding I got the booking now, that was weird not sure what happened but appears sorted. Disregard my question.
First time this has happened to me.
Got a message “Will be visiting friends. Can’t wait to stay in your place.” Guests’ name, 7 verifications. No dates in the message, checked phone app, email, and desktop Air site.
Called and was told the reservation request will block my calendar for 12 hours while they check the guests’ verifications. Shouldn’t the verification process be completed before the potential guest is allowed to send a reservation request?

I just got a booking request for 3 nights covering the next weekend. I think it is a fake account created by an extremely impolite guested that i declined earlier today. I made the original vetting question and he doesn’t reply. The problem is my calendar is blocked for the dates (I must accept or decline this request withing 24hours). I would like to see his reply to see if that’s really the same person before declining. Do booking requests block the calendar before being accepted?
