US democracy under threat

You do realise that this topic is now a magnet for every right wing, racist, entitled, deluded, Trump supporting nut job?

Fortunately, they are in the minority here.

Make them identifiable like the red hats??

The trolls are at least confining themselves to one thread. If they venture elsewhere, they can easily be banned.

It is not your forum either and you all should know better than to post politics or religious views. That is not what this forum is for, but being a bunch of inappropriate and unprofessional nut jobs you just cant help yourselves.

As a former government teacher I support listening to minority viewpoints. When we silence them we get in a little echo chamber. There are plenty of people in the US who saw the signs and the explicit posts on Parler and elsewhere calling for violent action and the coup. I think it’s helpful to be reminded that Airbnb hosts aren’t immune from the prejudices and passions of the mob.

I’m grateful to OP @Helsi for this topic, her caring thoughts, and the opportunity to speak reality.

Almost a year ago:

“ And you know you can’t trust this President to do what’s right for this country. You can trust he will do what’s right for Donald Trump. He’ll do it now. He’s done it before. He’ll do it for the next several months. He’ll do it in the election if he’s allowed to. This is why if you find him guilty, you must find that he should be removed. Because right matters. Because right matters and the truth matters. Otherwise, we are lost.”

Every time I think about how much trauma this nation could have avoided had he been removed at this time last year I feel a little sick. There still would have been plenty of pain given that the pandemic would still be here and obviously the Trumpists are determined to undermine the Republic, using violence if necessary. But I still believe things would have been much, much better with a somewhat competent leader who cares about the US more than their own political career and pocketbook.

Very true! if there is one thing that this situation has brought forth, is that his departure in 9 days will go out less as martyrdom and more with shame. While this won’t be for all, there are many who are finally turning on him, albeit too late

PS. There is an inverse impact regarding complaints posting politics; the more complaints, the more discussion on politics. Guilty as charged!

I vote this comment for the prize of most clueless…

Thanks for reminding me about how religion enters into this discussion! I think, for me, my total lack of religion is a great strength - people who rely on bearded fantasy people to fix their problems and give comfort to their predjudices have an easy way out of finding real solutions.

The only ones he cares about are the elites whom he pretended to disdain for his populist pretender act. The PGA and Deutsche Bank at the top of the list. People he thought could be bought with a medal (Bill Belichick) are rebuffing him.

I’m interested to see what, if anything, he says during his scheduled trip to the TX border today.

Yes, an interesting woman. I for one would not like to take an opened wage packet home to her on a Friday afternoon…

As do I, simply because it then gives me an excuse to argue debate with them.

However, I haven’t actually noticed any viewpoints other than a former lurker letting us all know what we can, and can’t discuss on here. I wouldn’t classify that as a viewpoint.

I’ve warned of a catastrophic covid death toll (400-800k) and/or a civil war on this forum multiple times starting in March 2020. People have been sticking in their heads in the sand at best and it hasn’t helped at all.

I’ve been reading a fair bit of foreign press coverage of the run up today, and some of it would be frightening if I lived in certain states right now. Curiously, a comment you made several months ago re civil war came to mind.

And now the poor bugger has tested positive.

Oh wait, her surname is Torres… she should just be grateful she’s still there.

“Perfect Call” … it wasn’t
“Totally Appropriate speech” … it wasn’t

“So if you read my speech, and many people have done it, and I’ve seen it both in the papers in the media, on television, it’s been analyzed and people thought that what I said was totally appropriate,” - Trump

This is what he considers totally appropriate to egg on a violent crowd, combined with even more violent rhetoric from others.

“Republicans are constantly fighting like a boxer with his hands tied behind his back . It’s like a boxer. And we want to be so nice. We want to be so respectful of everybody, including bad people . And we’re going to have to fight much harder . …

“We’re going to walk down to the Capitol, and we’re going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women, and we’re probably not going to be cheering so much for some of them, because you’ll never take back our country with weakness. You have to show strength , and you have to be strong.”

“When you catch somebody in a fraud, you are allowed to go by very different rules . So I hope Mike has the courage to do what he has to do, and I hope he doesn’t listen to the RINOs and the stupid people that he’s listening to.”

“I hope Mike is going to do the right thing. I hope so. I hope so, because if Mike Pence does the right thing, we win the election . … And I actually — I just spoke to Mike. I said: ‘Mike, that doesn’t take courage. What takes courage is to do nothing. That takes courage.’”

“I also want to thank our 13 most courageous members of the U.S. Senate, Senator Ted Cruz, Senator Ron Johnson, Senator Josh Hawley. … Senators have stepped up. We want to thank them. I actually think, though, it takes, again, more courage not to step up, and I think a lot of those people are going to find that out. And you better start looking at your leadership, because your leadership has led you down the tubes.”

“ We will never give up . We will never concede. It doesn’t happen. You don’t concede when there’s theft involved. Our country has had enough. We will not take it anymore, and that is what this is all about. And to use a favorite term that all of you people really came up with, we will stop the steal. …

“You will have an illegitimate president. That is what you will have, and we can’t let that happen . These are the facts that you won’t hear from the fake news media. It’s all part of the suppression effort. They don’t want to talk about it. They don’t want to talk about it. …

“We fight like hell, and if you don’t fight like hell, you’re not going to have a country anymore. ”

Each day more information is coming out about the terrorists, the insurrection and Trump’s non-response. Trump’s apologists have been wrong for 4 years and the covid deniers have been wrong for 11 months. Even a broken clock is right twice a day so maybe, eventually, they will be right about something. But based on current available evidence they deserve zero respect. Their leaders deserve zero leniency.

I still believe in the strength of American institutions. I believe that the majority of members of law enforcement and government are frantically working behind the scenes to keep Trump reined in and to keep us safe.

Today’s remarks include this threat:

“The 25th Amendment is of zero risk to me but will come back to haunt Joe Biden and the Biden administration. As the saying goes, be careful what you wish for.”

Followed with a plausible deniablity statement:

“Now is the time for our nation to heal. And it’s time for peace and for calm, respect for law enforcement and the great people within law enforcement is the foundation of the MAGA agenda. We’re a nation of law and a nation of order.”

I know I shouldn’t have expected anything Presidential out of him but thought he might go that way out of a sheer sense of self preservation. He may not care about the 25th Amendment or impeachment but his reputation with corporate America is ruined and he does care about that.

Where does it say in the forum rules that we cannot express sympathy for our fellow hosts in the US who were affected by the tragic, unprecedented events that happened last week resulting in death, violence and mob rule. @Waterforest
