Trinkets? Airbnb guests aren’t interested in useless decorations and knicknacks. They want a clean, comfortable place to stay where the host has anticipated what would be appreciated by travelers.
And you don’t want to have to be dusting and cleaning shelves full of tchotckes.
Use furnishings which are easy to clean and as bulletproof as possible.
My air BNB is single family 4 bedrooms. I have hosted almost 3 years, with good guests. I listed it as a family style home. Furnished it with very comfortable gently used furnishings. My guests have treated it like visiting grandma’s house usually leaving it very neat. My guests range from attending hard rock concerts to attending family functions. I hope the furnishing give my guests that favorite relatives home feeling, very neat and clean and welcoming.
In case anyone is interested, I ended up buying a Rook keyless deadbolt lock. It can use keypad, fingerprint, key fobs, smartphone or keyed entry.
So far it’s been great and guests seem to like it.
It’s only been a few months, so I’ll post updates after I have more experience with the lock, but I plan to replace one of my older locks with this new model…
There are other similar models on Amazon that are a little cheaper, but this one has been great, and very reasonable price.
I use a binder with our property name on it, and it has local attractions, near by restaurants and bars, particulars about the property, emergency contacts and near by medical centers. I also have a shelf with local coupons and discounts for local spots.
We have three 6"x6" chalk boards with little wooden bases. We use liquid chalk pens to leave notes for guests. 1 for the welcome with their name(s). One for the Wifi info, and one in the bathroom pleading that only toilet paper go into the toilet. Many comment on the personalization of the welcome note. We try to include something like, “Hi NAME & NAME! Have fun at Coachella!” or whatever. And I’ve always enjoyed seeing my wife’s and my name on something as we enter an Airbnb.
I like the idea of liquid chalk pens. Sounds like a very fun idea. I have an Amazon Echo 8 (which has a screen). I need to decide whether(if I can figure out how) to put their name on that as a splash screen – a high tech version of the chalkboard idea – or to go to the chalkboard route. I just don’t know where I’d out the chalkboard.
I used the Terro liquid ant bait for some time too but found that the ants started ignoring it. Thought it was because they were learning to avoid the poison but apparently they change what kind of foods they look for depending on what the colony needs?! The more you know!
Finding a powerful yet delicious smelling detergent may not be what the majority of guest want. I for one cannot have my face next to highly scented linen. In my limited experience i have found that most guests appreciate clean without the perfume. I in fact wish they would outlaw febreeze, now that stuff is gross!
There are many types of ants, too. Not all are attracted to food or sweet things. Among the many types of ants there are where I live, are leaf cutter ants. They can strip a huge plant of leaves overnight, or do the same to your veggie garden. They then chop up the leaves into little pieces which they carry off to their nest, where the leaves ferment and they then feed the fungus that grows on it to the queen.
Always look at the chemicals in air fresheners. Usually you are merely blanketing one odour with a chemical. Not good for you. This is true with all cleaners. So many use strong chemicals. Sure they’ve been approved but how many products get pulled from the market because later they realized they were toxic? Almost every week you read of this in the news. If its got chemicals its probably not good for you!
Im a final year product design student in Technology University Dublin, Ireland. As part of my final year project I’m looking into user/host experience within Airbnb. Mainly focusing on hosts.
I’ve made a survey which is only a 6 short questions (2mins total) and id really appreciate if anyone would take a moment to answer as the insights gained would be very valuable to my project!

Thank you for your time! And I completely understand if you don’t wish to or don’t have time!
@Markkilmartin11 I took a look at your survey. As with many of these surveys, you are coming from a place of having little to no basic information about Airbnb and hosting, which is easy to access if you just start reading some hosting forums.
Your question, “If Airbnb were to introduce a Digital / Smart lock that could be installed to help facilitate a more efficient means of checking in / out process, would this be of interest to you?” is a totally clueless question. Many hosts, if not most, already use digital/smart locks, there is no need for Airbnb to “introduce” one.
Really, people should do a modicum of research before putting together these studies with questions that make no sense.
