I’m Airbnb-ing an house until it sells, and wifi/broadband is a must. Can’t have sky installed, because if it’s cancelled after 3 months, I may get a penalty. Someone recommended mobile broadband, which I knew nothing about. It’s a sim card in a tiny box, that acts as a router, but it’s wifi from sim card data, like a dedicated mobile phone in hotspot mode…
so I bought one and it’s shite, barely manages 2 mbps, whereas most homes can get 33 mbps these days. Even switched it to the 5ghz option, no improvement.
Anyone know of a better option? What if the guests want to stream a film (pulls horrified face)
You want a ‘rolling contract’ broadband service
I used Mywebspot in Spain and it was fast enough for the 4 of us to use with our phones, not sure what the stats were. I may have a coupon code…

Before giving up on the mobile broadband, I would check a couple of things:
-
What kind of bandwidth does your personal smartphone get LTE/5G while in use in that home?
-
If you use the mobile broadband device in another location where you know that phones get excellent LTE/5G performance, what kind of bandwidth does the mobile broadband device get?
Mobile broadband devices are literally just the guts of an Android smartphone in a box and they should be able to get the exact same performance as any other phone. Placement of the device might be critical. It’s possible that the device is just kinda cheap and the radios aren’t capable of better performance and in that case, I different brand/model may work better. Finally, if the UK is anything like the US, the device may be deliberately throttled by the mobile phone carrier. Carriers know that they can be used to connect many devices to the internet, so they deliberately limit the bandwidth to discourage users for consuming too much.
I certainly do. Having trouble finding one

How nice to hear your voice again, Barns, although I’ve been absent myself for a while.
Have a look at something called “Smarty” sim cards. Mr Joan got some sent out from the UK whilst we were in Portugal. I have one in both my Android phone and tablet, and I think they are free, or at the least, very cheap, and the wifi is very good, better than in the house we were staying in.
More detail from Mr Joan;-
“Look at 3 Home Broadband on a rolling monthly plan. If you look on their website, you can check availability for your post code”. And stuff like that.
