In June 2013, I purchase a house directly across the street from my own home. My wife and I planned to downsize and move into it when we retire around 2033. My in-laws used it as a winter home from 2013 until my mother-in-law died in 2018. That was when we decided to try short-term rental so that we could keep the house in the best condition while earning enough to pay for upkeep and renovations so that the house is exactly the way we want it when we retire. I hosted my first Airbnb guests on December 27, 2018. I joined Airhostsforum in February 2019 to learn and share the experience. We had a great run hosting 48 reservations and earning Superhost all 5 quarters of our 15+ month run and a perfect 5-star rating. Unfortunately, even though I have lived in my community since it’s inception in 1995, I was unaware that my homeowner’s association banned short term rentals in 2010. On April 7, 2020, I received a violation notice from my HOA that prohibited me from offering short-term rentals. I was disappointed, but since I was breaking the rules, I unlisted the same day, and that was the end of my Airbnb hosting career. With COVID-19, it was the perfect time to “bow out”. I want to thank Airhostsforum for the advice and the opportunity to share.
