you cant see hep & HIV. so ppl are having sex and fluids then they are touching things? nope!

It’s naive to not think you have that risk with any guest.

I hope you don’t mind that the air conditioning is broken and the pool guy usually turns up around then.

I’d be tempted to say that I would only accept it if I was able to watch … for security purposes, of course.

But then I remember that I’m an old lady and just get on with my knitting …

(btw has the thread been censored?)

You have a message from Debthecat:

Dear Pretty Woman,

DebtheCat sent you a special offer of $300/hour for the Hot Sheets Motel.

And so? Of course you do realize you cannot contract HIV from surfaces right?

Who knows maybe they are reliving something that’s already happened in the cabin…

Glad you’re getting a better payout. Agree w the commercial rate; long before Airbnb I rented my house out for production (I’m in studio city) and they’d give us $1000/day (sometimes cash) on average to use one or two rooms and the driveway/garage for our very small house, while we are home. My Airbnb rate is anywhere from $145 to $300 on holidays and of course only when we are vacated with all our animals. If I get requests for production shoots I always refer them to my Giggster listing, and make sure they have the proper film permits too. That said, I’m always appreciative of potential guests who are up front about shoots …rather than sneaky!

Hmmmm. Obviously the risk is extremely low but it is not zero. I thought I would look into this as I enjoy reading books such as “Spillover” by David Quammen (medical nonfiction) and my takeaway has been, from this reading, that viruses are extremely tenacious and evolved to spread themselves, from the common cold to hep to HIV.

So –

  • HIV can live in a used needle for 42 days (link). Were a guest to leave behind a needle and a cleaner to accidentally either jab themselves thru their gloves or say scratch a mucous membrane (mouth, nasal passage) there would be a risk of HIV transfer.
  • HIV can be transferred by eating prechewed food left behind by someone. No adult cases, only infants, but just to point out this hypothetical means of transfer. (same link as above)
  • Dried blood (for example, on a property’s surfaces such as tables, chair arms, sinks, etc.) can contain HIV for up to 5 or 6 days, link, and if it comes in contact with broken skin, wounds or mucous membranes, can infect a person. (link)

(additional source: roommate who was a doctor who got needle-stuck by an angry patient with AIDS)

So … to wrap up:

  • You can’t get HIV thru the air.

  • You have at least a tiny, theoretical chance of getting it via a surface and a stronger chance of getting it from an accidental needle stick. So, take precautions.

  • Viruses and humans are in an interwoven dance. They do their best to infect us; we evolve defenses. It is best to acknowledge the risk of contracting serious viral illnesses (HIV, hep) and try to avoid infection.

  • Our knowledge of how viruses operate is always growing, such that one has to evaluate skeptically claims that “you cannot get (virus X) by (means Y).” Viruses mutate pretty rapidly, and science is always one step behind …

So the risk is ALWAYS present, not just with these guests.

YES. With the proviso that, you would have to look at the infectious disease rates of porn stars vs. the general public to get a good handle on the risk to the host.

WITH THAT SAID, didn’t I read at some point that the porn industry required weekly STD tests of the actors and took these risks very, very seriously.

EDIT: So paradoxically, their rate might be lower, vs. higher …

I am not worried even a little bit about contracting HIV from the surfaces in my cabin after this group leaves, I clean with gloves on for every guest. I have been in contact with 100’s of people with the HIV virus, I hug them and (gasp) kiss them on the mouth without a worry.

I will be participating in the AidsLifeCycle ride for the 7th time this June, it is a 545 mile bicycle ride from San Fransisco to LA I have raised over 50K since I have been doing this. Education is key to stopping the spread of HIV.

I wouldn’t assume pornstars are more likely to intravenous drug-users than vanilla guests.

Yes, pornstars are tested regularly for STDs.

Let’s not go back to 1980s myths that we can catch HIV just by being around those who are HIV positive.

You have reminded me of when I attended an HIV/Aids information day, held in a local mental health facility in the mid 1980’s. Some of the nursing staff on an in-patient unit started kicking off about the “dangers” of not knowing if patients were positive, how they should be screened pre-admission. People needing a fast admission to a MH facility?

I became so angry that I stood up and asked them if they intended to have sex with their patients. Didn’t go down too well at all.

I know what you mean. I had a boss at the time who told me that AIDS was a punishment from God to gay men for their ‘indecent ways’. I resigned from that job on the spot.

Hi @Debthecat

I don’t think anyone else reading your post would have leapt to the unfair and inaccurate assumption that you were using humour to hide a deep seated prejudice against gay men with your initial response :disappointed_relieved:

It was clear that your ‘straight’ reference was in relation to @RiverRock’s letting us know he had a request for his place to be used to carry out commercial filming as opposed to a straight forward booking.

@RiverRock - I wouldn’t host this booking (not before you jump down my throat too @Mexican because I am homophobic), but because if someone wants to use my listing on a commercial basis to film, then I will charge them commercial rates, not just an expensive day rate. I will want a contract and to see a copy of their liability insurance.
