I had a guest stay this last weekend, and I try to give a review promptly after checkout. So I drove home, looked around and saw little to be alarmed out and left a positive review. The guest had already left their feedback and had checked out early. Then I began my cleaning process and found huge piles of glitter behind the toilet in the master, and small amounts of glitter EVERYWHERE. Okay, fine. I had noticed the glitter a bit before I left the review, and assumed it was from a dress or something. I was surprised at how much there was but I donāt feel like that is a good reason to leave a bad review.
Then I found damp towels on the washer- like they had been washed but not dried, or had been used to clean up a mess. They smelled- BAD. There is clear evidence that they had extra guests over, and had a small party of some sort, and some one threw up and cleaned the mess with an entire roll of paper towels and tucked them into a separate trash bag and put it outside.
My listing clearly states No Parties, and extra guests have to be accounted for. So they broke my house rules on two counts and lied about it.
Then I found that someone had gotten into my personal toiletries (I put away my razor and toothbrush into a drawer with other personal items) and had used my razor. That is just⦠rude and gross.
I canāt edit my review because she posted her review JUST as she checked out. I donāt know how to contact Airbnb to edit the review. Iām just so sick of this whole thing. At the very least, I should have gotten an extra $10 a night for an extra guest.
I checked it- just didnāt notice these other things until later that evening. Didnāt notice the razor till I went to take my shower, for example. Didnāt notice the vomit soaked paper towels until this morning because it was trash day- they had put them into the outside trash can.
So they cleaned up well enough that at first glance I couldnāt tell they had broken any rules. But is it okay to break house rules if you clean up after yourself and make it so you canāt tell? I understand āno harm, no foulā Iām just bothered that they broke my house rules and then covered it up like sneaky teenagers and now I have no recourse.
You already know what you did wrong so take the lesson and move on. I agree with @sylvainbg about the camera. Anyone with whole house rental that doesnāt have a camera monitoring the premises for extra guests, pets, smoking, thefts, and other rules violations is taking a big risk.
Hi @Jen_kc, check to see if there is a way to Reply to the review that was left for you. You may be able to note something there. Other than that, Iām not sure that there are many options open to you. It does sound like they had a bit of party, but Iām afraid that you might be out of luck on this one. Iām sorry that you have to deal with this, it sucks to try and get a jump on the review process only to have moved too fast.
Personally, Iāll take ruined towels and vomit soaked garbage over glitter. We had someone do arts&crafts with their kids in our dining room one (entire house listing) and a year later weāre still finding glitter. Hopefully the glitter isnāt on carpeted areas, itās less of a hassle to clean it from tile or wood floors.
Unfortunately- the glitter is everywhere. It has washed out of the linens and mostly come off the tile, but itās on the sofa and all of the rugs. Itās coming up, but yes, weāll be seeing that glitter for years!
You both left reviews so that part is done. Focus now on trying to get her to cough up some money for your trouble and for having the party. Tell her that someone went into your personal drawers and used your special razorā¦and now you have to buy a new one. Tell her how hurt you are that she allowed these people into your space, and now you will have glitter for years to come. Make a list, type it out politely and just try to express your hurt and disappointmentā¦lol. Then send it through resolution. The worst she can do is ignore it. The best that happens is you get some money for your troubles and replacing that razor.
Yuck, Iām sorry that happened to you. Iāve learned the same lesson. I used to leave reviews immediately. Now, I wait until Iām done cleaning the guest room and the bathroom.
The review she left was very positive. Maybe Iām being a fussy-butt about all thisā¦
āJennifer has a wonderful home that is beautifully decorated and located! She is a wonderful host! Highly recommend for families for people who just want to live cozy and happy during their trip.ā
Honestly, I wouldnāt waste a nano-second on the matter. You learned a valuable lesson (check before one writes), and they did leave a positive review, which may be of value. What they did was annoying of course, but I would chuck this one to āexperienceā. I would be thinking however of the ways to prevent the same from happening in the future.
Us, too. We had one case (posted about on this board) where the bed looked fine until we stripped it to find the red wine stain down to the mattress protector.
believe it or not, I actually have a āno glitterā clause in my agreement.
The bachelorette hens LOVE glitter!
Sounds like you had a bachelorette party.
Thank you for the all the feedback. I did contact the girl, and told her my concerns and that she needed to pay for the extra guest- which she promptly did.
This morning I figured out where the vomiting incident happened- it the bathroom sink in the guest bath. It is completely clogged, and I didnāt notice because I just used clorox wipes to sanitize. They must have tried to run āitā down the drain as much as possible, which explains the entire roll of toilet paper used to clean up the mess.
I am so done with Air bnb. My home is worth more to me than $50 a night.
You rent out an entire home for $50 a night? Please, let me rent it before you quit Airbnb! LOL.
Without knowing anything about your market Iād suggest you raise your price and get fewer bookings. That would make the occasional bad experience more tolerable. And when things are toughā¦count the money.
I believe you have 48 hours from checkout to make a damages claim. Get a quote from a plumber, add up your damages and submit a request for funds to the guest. No reason you should have to foot the bill for vomit clogging th sink.
