Host cancels Asian women's airbnb

I know you’ve heard of classism as that’s Bernie’s main fight.

Oh my god, seriously? That’s your contribution? If you are incapable of reading more than a few sentences, get back to twitter.

Thank you for taking the time to write this Amy

You didn’t find it interesting and/or relevant? What a shame

Well I don’t think he called it that necessarily… In any event, my point is we just all so seem so overly sensitive these days that it seems like even making a simple observation about something gets you labeled with an -ism. With that I am going to withdraw from this discussion. I don’t really think it’s going anywhere. :frowning:

I agree. The purpose of this wonderful forum is for hosts to help each other. Certainly, we also have a laugh and go madly off topic often - which is fun - but I don’t think that any of us come here to be lectured. I had more than enough of that at university and that was many, many years ago.

After the first post re “classism” I admittedly didn’t read any further contributions from that member. It was getting pedantic for me and taking on world problems, socio issues.
My loss apparently that I didn’t read them in their entirety but that side of my brain does not compute.

As a Canadian observing the whole political scene south of the border I am amazed at the intelligence of the majority of the members contributions here.

I am also going to bid this thread adieu

Yeah… it’s a host forum, not a forum to take on the issues of the world. I am sure there are other forums out there that address that adequately.

AmyB - I completely respect your passion on this issue and bravo for speaking your feelings! But I have to say that @J_Wang may have also faced a lot of situations himself and being discriminated against… I won’t go into details here. You seem to be making blanket statements that all Section 8 housing people are good hard working people like your mother and yourself. There is a reason why communities don’t want to be overrun by Section 8.

Every single person I met on Section 8 (except for 1) was working under the table, took vacations, had the latest designer clothing, lastest cell phone, etc. I even had one friend tell me “cabinhost…please help yourself to my food as I just get too much in food stamps we can’t eat it all. My kids also get free breakfast and lunch at school.” Why did she get that much in food stamps? It’s because she was not reporting her under the table income. A large portion of her rent was being paid and other bills too. But for some strange reason all these people had enough money to spend on what I would call “luxuries.”

They worked the system big time. I don’t believe anyone here has anything against helping out the truly underpriveledged.

Agree, how hard is it to hit the return key? Mind you when a post is that long, nine times out of ten I loose interest after the second paragraph. Brevity is thee key to getting your message across. Oh and those tarp garages/sheds are a huge waste of money as they collapse after a big snow fall. Far better to make a proper shed or car port.

Unfortunately, It’s the kiss of death for landlords and other tenants.

Also, no other non-section 8 tenants will move into a building if there are Section 8 people in it. I work with low-income people–mostly “of color”–who tell me they steer clear of those buildings.

I agree. It seems that out in the “real world” it’s getting increasingly hard to have this sort of discussion civilly.

You are very wise. I think I’ll follow suit.

I think we all need to step away from the forum today and do something neutral on this Sunday. Like watch Meet the Press. KIdding!

My “trashy” remark was actually a response to someone above who wanted to the give benefit of the doubt to the host who must have been given a reason to use a racist remark because owning a home in Big Bear implied you were of a certain caliber. My point was merely that owning a home in Big Bear implied no such thing. You can own a big house and still be trashy. You can own a big house and still pile garbage outside. You can own a big house and still be a racist. And I made no such remarks regarding Section 8.

It has nothing to do with income. It has to do with how the people in this area have a reputation for how they compose themselves. The whole check your privilege argument is really a non-starter for me.

I just finished Colin Woodward’s book American Nations for the second time and am happy to discuss politics with you in private but not on this forum.
