Guest is asking for late check-out fee back

I just had a guest that paid extra $50 for a 3 hour check-out. Usually I charge $50 per hour (simply because I don’t want late check-outs) but I gave him a deal for $50 for all 3 hours which is my cost for getting an extra cleaner to make sure that the house will be ready in 1.5 hours instead the usual 3 hours - prepared for the next same-day guest.

At 11AM I sent him my regular email thanking him for his stay and please lock all doors and alarm the house, and also reminding him that as we agreed on - he’s late check-out is at 2PM.

He replies me back “we’re actually leaving now. I’d really appreciate the late check-out fee refunded”.

So… I wanted to be fair and call my cleaner to tell him not to come and I will pay him in full. He said just pay me $40 instead. Now I contacted the guest telling him all I can do is $10 since I have costs canceling the cleaner 3 hours before. He said “great, transfer it”. Which I will later today.

To be honest, this whole experience just rubbed me the wrong way. You’d go that far for $10? Really? This is a $350 a night house. So I want to mention it in my review for other hosts to know who they are dealing it.

Do you think it’s fair to do?

Refund him the $10 as you’ve told him you would. Then give him 1 star for communication and 1 star for house rules. He sounds like a rude, entitled prick

Lol. Would you tell other hosts?

I might mention poor communication issues in the review but not be specific. If he gets riled up by the review he might try and get the rest refunded and I wouldn’t put it past Airbnb supporting him. I know it’s an unpopular opinion to not review properly but this could potentially leave you out of pocket. You could say ‘a poor comminication issue left me in an uncomfortable position’

My concern is really to let other hosts know the type of guest they will be dealing with. I’ll try find good wording for that.

Might have to.

Overall, I don’t understand why someone would go this far for $10 especially when was gifted 2 free hours and knew I had to go through all that for this $10. Go figure…

Just because the guest rented your $350 a night place does not mean that he is not a tightwad in other ways. Down-star Communications and House Rules. Review should be factual not personal:

Guest as OK, but requested 3 hour late checkout ($50 up charge) and then wanted the charge refunded because he didn’t stay the full 3 hours – inconveniencing both us and our cleaner.

To be honest I am not sure why you are getting so narked about this.

Yes the guest changed their arrangements but you were the one that offered him a $10 refund. You didn’t have to do this. I wouldn’t have.

Why get annoyed when you offered a partial refund and he accepted? It’s petty on the guests part but you opened yourself up to it.

I think it would be petty to mention that he decided not to avail himself of a late checkout. Yes he should have let you know earlier but its not the end of the world. You aren’t out of pocket.

A deal is a deal. He shouldn’t have asked and you should not have returned any of it. What’s with people. If he paid 350 a night why does he fiddle fart around with $10 here and there. So typical of people who can afford to pay 350 for a vacation rental (also known as the entitled rich.)

“fiddle fart” …

I offered it to him because of 2 reasons: A. It was the honest thing to do. B. I knew already by his behavior that he will end up being a “fart” if I say no.

I don’t care for the $10 and that I’m not out of pocket. I’m annoyed with the process which was a drag. This while forum is “not the end of the world” right? But we share what we feel might be

He also drove a $120K car

It’s not about $10, it’s about control.

My new personal challenge of the day is to use ‘fiddle fart’ in conversation. I’ll report back shortly with the results

I must give credit for fiddle fart to my dear friend Captain Janie, who died in 2002 of pancreatic cancer… She was a gorgeous captain of 100 ton vessels, plied the Caribbean and Venezuela sport fishing circuits, could change propeller blades underwater without even taking her best earrings off and rode out two cat 5 hurricanes at sea. She was the bravest person I ever met.

Fiddle fart was one of her favorite phrases and I think of my dear friend whenever I use it.

Would I offend any rich people here if I make a blanket statement saying that many of them are the cheapest tightwads of all. ??:rofl::moneybag::moneybag::grimacing:

In my experience with rich clients; many of them are proud of their ability to squeeze a dollar until the eagle grins.

Off Tangent! I used to work in a shopping centre next door to a department store. The store would regularly have 90% off mark downs on discontinued stock, being next door I would take advantage of this. It got back to me that one of the cashiers at the check out made some disparaging remarks about me that I took to her management. She was confronted about her comments and i given a $50 gift card as I was a valued client…big lesson to her - dont bitch about your customers as every customer is valued!
