I’m electrically illterate, so this still doesn’t mean much to me, but I’ll take everyone’s word for it that it’s better. I just checked with the guy who does our electrical work, and he had no idea what I was talking about. I’ll show him pictures on the net. It looks like one can buy these things in India, at least.
Also, please clarify voltage. In England you are on 220. Here in the US it’s 110. Correct? This is also one reason for the lack of outlets in the loos there across the pond. Higher voltage.
India is also 220 (sometimes given as 240). But I’m not sure why this is important.
I talked to my guy. Once upon a time he tried to install something called a LCB, which apparently stands for Leakage Circuit Breaker. But it did not work well - it used to trip all the time. Perhaps there are problems with Indian conditions. We rewired the house here in early 2011, so the wiring is not that old. And he says he tried the LCB after the wiring was replaced. I told him to try getting those special outlets for the bathrooms, as least.
UPDATE: Regarding the face/makup mirrors, I had someone check locally. It’s possible to have them custom made here. I guess that’s one advantage of being in India - this would be impossibly expensive in the West. They don’t seem to manufacture the light up variety in India, though. I found some advertised on Amazon India, but they are all manufactured in China (i.e. next door), and imported from the USA. (What’s wrong with this picture?) That’s doesn’t make much sense - twice the price and no warranty.
Anyway, I’m asking for input about the size, and the magnification level.
With regard to size, I’ve seen mirror diameters between 3 in and 8 in mentioned. Would it make sense to go larger? Since this is not intended for travelling, size is not so much an issue, but it still needs to fit in a drawer. Recommendations regarding diameter appreciated.
Normally one side of a vanity mirror is normal, the other one is magnified. I’ve seen values between 3x and 7x mentioned. What’s a good magnification to go with?
Input appreciated, preferably by people who have used a makeup/vanity mirror - I haven’t. Thanks.
Yeah, I think that would be sufficient for shaving and make-up. I think 3X is standard. Anything more and I think it would be too up close for anything but eye make-up.
OMG Faheem…you are over-thinking and obsessing over this little item. It’s just a small facial mirror after all. Suitable mirrors can be found in department stores or in the beauty aisles of grocery stores…most everywhere for nominal prices. If they are reasonably priced on Amazon, get one.
There is no magic size. My personal make-up mirror is 3" in diameter with a 7x magnification (although it may be as high as 10x). I got it at Wally-world (Wal*mart) for less than $5 US. It is a hand-held one that I keep in the top drawer in the bathroom. I never travel without it and I never use those large mounted magnified mirrors which are lighted that are found in better hotels because they are like fun-house mirrors (distorted images).
You may refer to it as a make-up mirror but it really is much more than that. It makes it easier to see those small wayward brow hairs that require plucking, to remove an eyelash or piece of grit from under one’s eyelid or zero in on a rare skin blemish/pimple, etc.), or to check for new wrinkles…you get the picture! Of course, a magnified mirror is really valuable when applying eye liner, mascara and lipstick precisely, or checking for food particles in one’s teeth or for a quick look up the nostrils before the dental appointment and examining dental work. It’s a grooming aide and beyond!
By the same token, if a female is dependent on it (as I am), she will travel with her own magnified mirror but if you provide one, whether in the bedroom or bathroom, mounted or not, it will be appreciated.
wow, I forgot this was even about mirrors as we got onto RCD’s!
Mirrors…every day I use my stand alone makeup mirror and I love it. It’s exactly this one pictured. The actual mirror is 5". 5x’s magnification on one side, normal on the other. Spins on the stand for each side. Battery operated light shines from within (my battery died ages ago and I just keep it on my bathroom window ledge for the natural light). Brand is Touch Beauty.
Must be on a stand so you have 2 hands free for doing whatever.
I’m going to by a couple for my Air home too.
Well, I see you are getting to know me. Congratulations. Over-thinking and obsessing is what I do.
Um, not here they aren’t. I found one thing on Amazon India which was 6 in in diameter and 3x on one side. But if I can custom make one, that’s probably what I will do. Most things in my guest room are custom made, including the door, the windows, the bed frame, the mattress, the bed sheets and pillow cases, the desk, and the wardrobe.
Hmm. 3 inches diameter seems pretty small. And 7x magnification seems high. I guess I could provide two mirrors with different magnifications. it’s a one-time cost, unless it gets dropped. Which is relatively likely, I suppose.
I’m thinking a 10 inch diameter would be reasonable, as I said above. Since it isn’t intended as a travel mirror, the bigger the better, within reason. It does need to fold up and fit in a drawer. 5" seems a little small. Also 5x magnification seems a little high. Dunno, I don’t have experience with this. Hence my question here.
8" is big enough but not too big. As long as the mirror is double sided, with one side being normal and I magnified, then the other side should have magnification of 5 to 10. That way, men can use it to shave on the on magnified side and women can use the magnified side to apply I make up and such.
I think it should be freestanding rather than mounted to a wall so whomever wants to use it can use it wherever they would like.
Perhaps many women do, but I do not travel with my own mirror. My personal one is not suitable for packing, I have never bothered to buy one that is, because almost every place I travel to has one. I would miss it if there wasn’t one.
Would 10 inches be too big then? And I’ve no idea what magnification of 5 to 10 would look like. And there doesn’t seem to be a consensus about what magnification to use. Sigh.
Oh, and I’ll definitely go with one on a stand. That’s a no-brainer. Mounting one on the wall makes no sense to me, though it seems like a popular choice based on the models I’ve seen.
If you’ve got the space, 10" isn’t too big. I think that would be fine. In terms of magnification, go with 10X. That seems to be what most of the ones I see are, including mine. Enough to make putting eye make up on or getting an eyelash out of your eye easy, but not so big all you see is every individual pore on your face.
It’s good for doing eye make up (can’t wear glasses while doing eye make up & without my glasses on I really need that magnification) and the other side I use for full face view.
I agree a bit bigger (say 10") would be better
Poor Faheem. You can’t get on this forum without multiple conflicting opinions!
I do think if you do go with a larger sized mirror, going with a stronger magnification would be good as you’ll be able to see a larger area. 5x-7x would be reasonable with a 10in mirror.
I was actually going to ask whether going with a stronger magnification makes sense with a larger size mirror, but I suppose it does. I’ll go and check out a shop that supposedly makes these tomorrow.
So @faheem, what I love about you is that you actually verbalize what goes on in your head. I’m super analytical and second guess everything, but I try to hide my neuroses, lol. Not sure if you’ve seen Disney’s “Tangled”, but she’s my favorite Disney princess because that’s what inside my head sounds like
Heh. That’s what we do in my culture. When you’ve got a problem, you analyse it, look at the pieces, and try to see how it fits together. This tends to involve talking about it. You’ll see the same mental patterns with many academics. We also tend to worry about spelling and grammar.
Yes, I’ve seen Tangled. It’s a good film. Lots of nice bits. For example (spoilers ahoy) when they’re trapped in the cave underwater and she gets her hair to glow, and not just glow, but also point to an exit. Sapient magical hair for the win!
Which particular bit did you have in mind, re “that’s what inside my head sounds like”?
I don’t remember Rapunzel being neurotic, just improbably attractive and competent, like the general run of Disney Princesses. Though there is that funny bit at the beginning (spoilers) when she has a mini nervous breakdown on leaving the tower.
