COVOID-19 Booking Madness

I would love to spend days on the beach and if not for a couple of things (like my two dogs and the fact that I still get some dog and Airbnb business) I’d be looking to do just that.

That started to be ridicilous, I am here to ask for mass movement of hosts. I have nothing to say guests who are cancelling due to travel restrictions or simply self quarantineed ones.
I have a guest who has been staying in my place and has another upcoming booking for the same place cancelled his reservation to travel to USA, which is not preventing the health issue , actually risking. I explained this to a support specialist, nothing changed.

Now I had another cancellation for a reservation that made on 15th of March. Which is out of covered dates, as long as guest or I havent been tested positive for COVID-19. Again full refund.

We ate the food together but why we left alone to do all the dishes ?

We can’t blame Airbnb, nor should we blame the guests. Doctors are saying to avoid travel to “flatten the curve”. Guests who are cancelling are just following that advice, and Airbnb is rightly siding with those who no longer want to travel. It’s a tremendous blow to us all, but it is for the greater good. It will also get better as time progresses. Airbnb is only allowing cancellations in the short term. People who book moving forward will have fewer options.

When they updated their policy 2 days ago we immediately got 3 cancels within the first hour. By the end of the day we had about 5 total (out of 13 over the next 20 or so days). Today I went through the rest and cancelled them on my side. We’re going to just let things cool down before we open back up.

Yes, the requirement of approval depends on the reasoning given.

As expected, I’m down to 3 bookings remaining for the rest of my booking window. Two of them have communicated with me and are not planning to cancel. The third did not respond to my message yesterday. She also did not respond to my post-booking greeting message, so she’s likely not monitoring e-mails or notifications from Airbnb. She said she was coming for a conference on April 16, so I expect it will be cancelled. I’ve now sent her a text and expect my next cancellation tomorrow. If I’m luckly, I’ll keep the last 2 reservations (total of 9 days).

No service: No money.

This is the first time I’ve bulk emailed my guests. I sent each of the remaining ones in the next 20 days messages 2-3 times over the last 2-3 days. I had a number of them (around 5) that haven’t replied to any of the messages, including the one where I cancelled their reservation. It’s bizarre.

I messaged (via the platform) each of my first 10 guests after the Walmart shooting here in my town of El Paso. It was after their stay and I messaged them to say that I was donating the proceeds of their stay to the El Paso Victims Shooting Fund. I wanted them to feel good about it and connected to my city that I love so much. One of the 10 replied and he’s a Border Patrol officer who has stayed before and with whom I’ve had some “off topic and off the record” conversations. ONE. So much for the “Airbnb Community.”

I sent messages to my three upcoming guests asking them to cancel or confirm. One responded and cancelled, one responded and cancelled but wanted to rebook for next year, and one hasn’t responded at all.

I have guests further out that I haven’t contacted yet, but I imagine most will cancel as we get closer to their dates.

Yeah, but that’s not much different than anything else around here. The whole hoard for me concept is pretty well localized to the United States. We aren’t seeing grocery stores being sold out on large scale in EU for example. It’s pretty bizarre.

One more cancelled. Yesterday, he said he wasn’t planning to cancel, but I think he talked to the other members of his group and they decided it wasn’t worth the risk. He said that all 5 members of the group are over 70. Seems like the right move.

So far, my guest scheduled to check in 3 days from now says she’s still coming, but I’m expecting the only other remaining guest to cancel.

I really lucked out this month. I had one business traveller book, which filled in this week, then I had another guest contact me for a two week stay ( I never usually allow those) at a deep discount. I won’t be getting as much, but ends will meet now, which I am grateful for. April is still looking pretty lean, but hopefully things will turn around there too.

I think you hosts all need a good relaxing massage.

The guest that is supposed to check-in tonight still says she’s coming.

The guest for the only other remaining reservation on my calendar (April 16-18) finally responded and said she’s going to wait and see.

On a serious note, My massage therapist texted this morning and said they and all hairdressers and barbers were ordered to shut down until 3 April.

the person who posted this is a massage therapist who made the decision to shut down on her own. she posted this a couple of days later.

Hi all,

We’ve experienced a few booking cancellations, but interestingly, we’ve had an upsurge in new booking requests – from people who have been travelling and need to self-quarantine.

We’ve had three such requests today alone and these bookings have been for between two and four weeks.

Interesting times!
