Can someone who is not very outgoing be a successful host?

You do @Paul_Janaway - I’m twice your age

I sometimes get a bit annoyed when people think that the internet is something for ‘young people’. I built my first website when you were just ten years old

My mums almost 60. She got a tablet a couple years ago. Never used a computer before. My dads had minimal experience since the early 2000s but sorta knows what hes doing.

But I totally agree with you. Teens think they run the internet but it was a thing before they were born. All they have brought to it is a huge amount of selfies lol

I built my first website when i was 13. Haha but I was programming at 5. Just basic stuff on my commodore. Lol

It’s a bit like the way that every generation thinks they invented sex

haha @eyeborg “we are one…resistance is futile” (maybe this should be the new tagline for the forum)

Well, obviously, I don’t know. I’ll never know.

There are plenty of things in life that I will never know - this is just another one of them.

We cleaned up, spoke to Airbnb, they deleted him, we moved on. If I were to dwell on every odd thing that occurred in the course of a year of hosting, I would have no time to think about anything else.

It happened. It was resolved. We put it behind us and moved on.

And I think that is the best suggestion for everyone.

Just my anecdotal observation. I am 61 and use Google all the time. But when it comes to guests, the ones that want me to tell them are my age and the ones that look it up themselves are younger. Maybe the people my age are wanting to relate to me more because we’re similar, so they ask instead of looking it up, as a reason to chat.

And that intellectual thought started with them, because all past generations were were made up by royal idiots.

OK, confession time, I’m … 70 next birthday and I was an “early adopter” of the Interwebs. In about 1995, when I was in my fifties I was doing an MBA (just for fun, y’know) and I remember doing an assignment on Data Warehousing (and I have absolutely no recollection of what that is …) for which I got top marks. I remember the tutor praising it to the others, particularly as I had “used the INTERNET for research” Yes, that shiny new research tool! What a contrast with today when teachers are trying to stop students passing on huge chunks of Google as “research”!

It is true, though, that many Seniors aren’t confident around computers and the internet. I teach one-to-one courses which are tailored to what they need (email, web searches and Facebook usually) and I think that the people I teach are reassured by the fact that someone of their own age can do these things rather than have their grandchildren do it for them!

My father is 74, he never used internet and still has flip phone.
They actually JUST bought flat screen TV but only because old one broke. I know that very recently they were ordering movies throug mail, lol. Now they are enjoying Netflix and other cool sites. My step mother who is 73, got a hang of internet right away. She plans vacations, orders plane tickets, has facebook and instagram.

My mom still thinks her browser is a website and her AOL is a program! She can be forgiven though, she is past 90.

My mom is 70 and is pretty good with computers but is lost when it comes to Facebook.

No matter how I explain it, she just can’t understand the concepts of the wall and newsfeed. She’s always baffled about why “these people’s pictures are coming up on my Facebook.”

Because you friended them, Mom!

Or when she sees posts of complete strangers because they were set to public and one of her friends liked or commented on them. That one really throws her for a loop.

My mom too. LOL. She isn’t sure how so-and-so got to be on her Facebook. But I have her trained so well on FB now that she loves the idea of checking it to see what we all are up to.
