Airbnb sponsoring Facebook Groups-did you see the email?

I received an email to join an Airbnb sponsored Regional host Facebook group. New offering. My area has a whopping 3 members.

This feels like an extension of the Airbnb community accessible via Airbnb help.

Anyone else get these notices? Anyone participating?

I actually privately reached out to a newer host than myself that’s up the hill to see how things were going and welcome her to the neighborhood.
While she responded, it wasn’t all warm and fuzzy. Maybe she thought I was a stalker or trying to steal some of her business, but it was a genuine reaching out to say hi.
Not a fan of Facebook, so there’s that.

I’ve had the cold response happen too when I reached out a new host in my neighborhood. What’s interesting is I had was hosting years before her in that area and I don’t need to steal her business. In the past 12 months I’ve referred guests to other hosts 6x because I couldn’t accommodate their rentals and the other hosts in the neighborhood could. She may have missed out on referral rentals from me.

While she’s really close, we wouldn’t be in competition as she accepts lots of one-nighters and I don’t. But, maybe she’s not always looking at other STR in the area like I am.
Just want a sense of what others are doing. I live at the rental and doesn’t look like that many in this town do.
Who knows, maybe at some point we’ll bump into each other.
Met another host last spring as I was working in the yard and she and her husband stopped to comment on it. One thing led to another and found out they were long time hosts here and had also been in my former town in AZ. They were super nice, she brought me a plant and we’ve been in touch a little. Making connections is not that hard.

I got something like that for New England a little while back.

Any idea if Airbnb got a good-sized group going? My area has 3 members & mine is pendingšŸ˜ā€”kinda small

I don’t know, I have to admit that I didn’t go further than the notice about it.

My next door neighbor is a host and many of our former guests are. I reach out to them for more local questions. I like connecting with people who are doing experiences because they offer something for my guests to do and are less competition.

Regional groups have been going since last year and work well in the UK

@Annet3176 I’ve had the same chilly reception from a couple of other hosts in my area here on coastal NC. I don’t reach out anymore or refer people to them as a result. I did get the feeling that they were reluctant to take the conversations further and something in their response made me think they thought I was after their business. Far from it. I am only open for checkins a couple of days a week now. I’m kind of burned out for the season.

I was here way before them and will probably still be here when they’re gone. I’m one of the longer lasting hosts in my area.

I have said it before and will say it again, and again.
FB is evil, they brought us trump and the current antivax crowd would be nowhere without FB.

Any social media or internet site can be used to promote evil and stupidity and misinformation.

Unfortunately, the very positive things about the worldwide web- having access to information at one’s fingertips, connecting with people you may have lost track of and would love to reconnect with, human rights abuses being documented in real time, etc. seem to have taken a backseat to the dissemination of misinformation and the spreading of hatred.

I have never had a Facebook account, nor any other social media aside from this and a couple other forums of interest to me, nor do I ever intend to.

I resisted getting Whatsapp for years, as it’s owned by Facebook, but recently added it in order to easily communicate with family and friends in far-flung places.

One thing I find irritating is how many people seem to assume that everyone uses Facebook.

Both of these alternatives are gaining popularity:

Have a read and work out what works for you. We communicate with guests on all three now, whichever is their preference.

Personally, I use Signal.

Don’t forget about Twitter, Parler, GAB, WeMe & Telegram. It’s a multi-headed snake…

Telegram is a favorite with Qanon-ers. Telegram claims they will be implementing rules so it is not a free for all. Interesting that Q believers are embracing an app originating in Russia.

Good to know.

Why am I thinking 1 poor little nerd (I love geeks) is slowly setting those Facebook groups up around the world as they create the email list, they set up the group, push send & go to the next area?

Agreed. I briefly had a FB account years ago and apparently it is still ā€œfindableā€ even though I have made every attempt to deactivate it and haven’t posted in probably 6-7 years. I am amazed at how many apps (banking, investment, shopping, etc) want me to verify with my FB account. Surely they can see I do not use it in any capacity and have never used it for verifying other accounts. It’s just a thing I guess.

Ditto!!! And to top it off, one of the newbies I reached out to suggested the only way we could come over was to book a night! I said I didn’t view others as competition and hopefully we can meet/support one another and offered to show her our place. Sigh, some people can be so short-sighted.

A few years ago I was in a facebook group for in home dog boarders. I realized a member of the group was here in El Paso and new to both dog boarding and El Paso. I messaged her and offered to meet with her, have her come look at my set up, etc. She responded favorably then ghosted me. Her loss. I often am booked up and have to turn people down and they often ask if I know anyone in town. I always have to say that I don’t. When I travel a good friend stays at my house. I’d love to know some other dog boarders here but it seems hit or miss.

I briefly joined a facebook group for Airbnb hosts but all the people posting were whiney complainers displaying a low level of competence and hostility to improvement so I didn’t last long there.
