Airbnb app messaging notifications not coming through

Hello, seasoned hosts!

I have been a host for 6 whole weeks and every little problem I have run into, I have found the answer here. (Although I have found there is NO answer as to what you should charge for a cleaning fee! ) We host a guest suite for 2 in our home’s basement, in the US.

I have been encouraging my guests to use the Airbnb app on their phones if they feel comfortable doing so, and to turn on notifications to ensure we communicate through the messaging platform. That has been working great, and I have had 6 weeks of Airbnb ā€œchimesā€ regularly, with no problems. My last guest, however, said every time he tried to message me via the app, he got an error message, so he just went to the messaging platform through email on his laptop and it worked. Then when he arrived he was able to use his phone to notify me of his arrival, but I did not see that message until the following morning. I got neither a chime from the app NOR an email saying he had messaged me. I just happened to go into messaging to send him a message, and there his was from his arrival time the night before. (We just ended up talking in yard the next night, but he could have felt ignored or irritated since I asked him to let me know when he arrived).

Now my next guest and I are communicating, and I am not getting notified, neither with sound, nor with email, nor with a little number stuck to the app icon. I have to go into the inbox and look.

I have read way back into yester-year about how awful hosts think the app is, but I was wondering if there is anything current (Sept 2020) going on with the app that you know about. (I have an iPhone 7 plus, I did recently update and I also restarted both my phone and MacBook).

Thank you, this is my first posted question and I feel nervous. :grimacing:

Do you mean you updated iOS or the Airbnb app?

I think everyone has has periodic problems with the app and the website. Sometimes when one isn’t working correctly the other is and vice versa. Like any internet based service, there can be occasional problems.

I don’t know of a current issue as I’m closed at this time. Whenever you get a reservation make sure you write down (put on a spread sheet, take a screen shot, whatever method you prefer) the guest’s name and cell number. That way you have a back up to contact them. Some hosts also get the guest’s actual email address, not the Airbnb based one.

Yes you want to keep any problematic communications on the platform in case of an issue but for most guests there are no issues.

I would call or text the guest direct if you need to communicate and the guest is having problems with the app.

I meant I updated iOS. (And by ā€œIā€ I mean ā€œitā€ had just updated, and then the app issues started within a couple days).

That is a possible cause and updating the Airbnb app might help, but even if the iOS update caused your problem, it doesn’t mean an update to the app is available to resolve it.

No need to be nervous here!

You are probably right to think it’s a result of your iOS update on your phone. You should go into Settings → Notifications ->AirBnB which may have gotten munged by the update, and then check all your Notifications settings.

I always turn off automatic updates on all software and devices. I never update anything until a month after its release unless it won’t work without an update.

At the very least, change the setting on your phone to turn of auto updates, and always check online for problems with a new version of iOS before updating. It’s as as simple as Googling ā€œiOS N.NN problemsā€. That has saved me from several disastrous Apple upgrades.

@SweetSuite You could also check in the desktop version to receive notification via SMS. That way, if one isn’t working, maybe the other will. I don’t use the app at all. I have SMS and email checked in my settings to receive notifications.
