People are always looking for a bargain. Although your cancellation policy is flexible, Airbnb will keep its fees. This feels like yes-this person will probably cancel and doesn’t want the Airbnb fee penalty.
I can understand waffling because a new guest sometimes is just clueless and there is a fine line between helpfulness & self protection

Dear guest, sorry, Airbnb doesn’t work that way. If you cancel and are eligible for a refund, Airbnb will refund your payment (usually less their fees). Thanks for your interest.
