Sorry if this has been covered previously! I’m SO done w/ duvet covers & quilts, & want to switch to a lighter blanket, w/ a thicker (than a normal sheet) covering the bed. I’ve gone brain dead trying to shop for it, not knowing what to look for! Regular top sheets are not the answer, so any advice? Tia!
It’s called a top flat sheet but it’s not thicker than the other sheet so maybe that’s not the correct answer.
You can search for ‘triple sheeting’ and ‘decorative top sheet’
I had never heard of triple sheeting until I saw it mentioned on a hosting forum a few years ago. Personally, I find it really bizarre and it was developed so that hotels don’t have to wash the blankets or uncovered duvet, which to me is yuck.
It presumes that the sheets all stay in that configuration so the blanket never touches someone’s body.
The first thing I would do when encountering a bed made like that would be to pull those sheets out from under the mattress all the way around- I can’t stand tucked-in top sheets, like I’m sleeping in a straightjacket. Then I would unfold the double folded sheets and blanket at the top, because I would find that bulk to be annoying. And as I often throw off the blankets in the middle of the night because I get too hot, the sheet over the blanket would likely end up on the floor.
Also, it is supposedly a time saver when making the bed, but all that lining up of the 2 top sheets, the sandwiching and folding and tucking seems like it would take no less time than putting a clean duvet cover on.
Not exactly what you’re asking but I recently bought a couple of these for my new listing and love them. The weight is perfect, they wash beautifully, and it’s a breeze to make the bed quickly and neatly.

I’ve used a duvet cover with no insert for years in the summer.
I also had a super bright kind of “top sheet” thing I used before I toned down my decor in the airbnb room. It’s no longer available so I can’t link it but it was just a single layer with a band sewn on the edge. Like a bedspread made of a sheet but the size of a duvet, not a bedspread. LOL.
You use the duvet cover as a top sheet, or as a bed cover and extra layer if the sheet isn’t enough warmth?
In peak summer I have a duvet cover, light blanket, top sheet and fitted sheet. If they are the “try to get it down to 68 degrees in the room and load up on blanket” types there are blankets in the closet. In 9 years of summers, no complaints about a wierd empty duvet cover. It’s like two layer of a sheet, so similar to what @mollimac is asking about.
When a host who had travelled as a guest in Europe said they disliked the European style of no top sheet and just a duvet, because she and her husband found the duvet too hot, but would have liked to have a top sheet to cover with, instead of nothing, some European hosts said, “You could have just taken the duvet cover off and used that as a top sheet”.
But if I were a guest, I would assume that the host wouldn’t want me to remove the cover from the duvet.
Yep, upon thinking it over, this is what I’m going to do in the suite.Tried it on our own bed, & it’s the perfect weight. Thanks a bunch for all of the insight!
