There have been toilet paper discussions on here before; how much to leave, what kind, etc.
I checked into a new Airbnb this evening. When I went to the bathroom, this was what I found for toilet paper. I’ve looked all through the house. That is the only toilet paper in the entire place. Granted I’m just one person, but this is a three night stay booking.
Oops! Yes, someone forgot to restock. I’d message the host and ask for some to be delivered if it is in their amenities list (if it isn’t you’re on your own). As a host I’d be mortified if that happened and I’d address it ASAP.
Unfortunately, it’s not the only host fail at this AirBnB. It took me 25 minutes to get in due to the August smart lock not working because the host didn’t give me access—he put the wrong dates/times in, and the host gave unclear directions on how to find the backup key.
There are several other #hostfail issues, (dirty oven, rusty fridge, issues with lighting) but I feel I’m being too nit picky.
Yes, I think so too—just overlooked it. But this place is hella out in the sticks in the mountains of Virginia and the nearest store of any description that might have TP is at least a 30 min drive. Luckily, I always carry toilet paper, baby wipes, and paper towels in my car.
Oh, and yes, the host does list he provides TP.
I’m sure it’s just an oversight but there are numerous other issues. I’m not impressed with his hosting chops…attention to detail is sorely lacking.
Dirty oven would be a fail for me. No excuse for poor cleaning. Rusty fridge, not so much, but that’s because I live in an area where everything rusts fast. I don’t have rusty appliances myself, but I had a lovely three day holiday with some friends at a rather rustic beach hotel where the rooms were far from fancy, but quite clean, and the common kitchen area had a terribly rusty fridge with a sign on it that said “I know I’m ugly, but I work!” The sunset view from that common area was stellar and no one cared about the rusty fridge that kept the beer cold
That’s terrible! I truly don’t understand why some hosts are so cheap with TP. It’s an inexpensive item so why penny pinch? Saving a few cents on TP will only result in bad reviews. I like to leave extras, if not used, then I leave it for the next guests. In this case, more is better than less.
My daughter and her fiancee rented an Airbnb in Arizona and the week they were there they got some type of stomach virus and didn’t have enough toilet paper. Couldn’t go out for it because they were both so sick.
They ended calling the host and asked for more TP. The host brought over one roll of TP but with an attitude and then mentioned in his review that so and so were great guests but if hosting them, beware that they require extra TP.
I think it’s ridiculous that hosts think TP is gold. I can understand when there were shortages but that situation is over so why be so cheap with the TP?
I understand that in some countries TP is a luxury. When traveling to specific countries, one knows to pack TP in the suitcase. When I went to Cuba I knew to pack TP but here in the USA TP is not a luxury.
I’m sorry that on your vacation, you have to go out shopping for TP. Not fair to you as a guest.
I don’t think you are and I would definitely contact him, tell him about the issues and if not resolved quickly I’d mark him down on the review.
I stayed in a multimillion dollar home in Boston that barely had enough TP. There were 6 women for 7 nights, 2 more for 2 nights and we ended up spending one night in Provincetown. I thought we were going to run out in at least one of the 4 bathrooms. The owner-manager was out of town during our stay but he lives in the guest house in back normally. I messaged him and he told me where the extra would be but there was none there. We ended up having just enough without buying more. In Costa Rica, same thing. No extra supply found so we bought more. Then apparently the housekeeper came in and put in more while we were out.
I didn’t mark either place down in reviews. They were beautiful places that we loved and would rent again but I don’t understand why I have to stress out about tp in a place I paid over $5000 a week for.
I haven’t contacted him yet. I didn’t arrive until after 10 pm last night, and I just got up an hour or two ago, walked and fed the pup, and am now getting ready to have my coffee. I won’t bother the host until I’m properly caffeinated and in a reasonable place, mentally. NOT A MORNING PERSON and these are not issues I would bother a host about as late as I got in last night.
Remember when it was gold Spring 2020? Maybe people are still in that mindset.
I have one person coming for 6 nights. I’ve got 3 rolls.
Three rolls would last me about 2 months, but know that’s not the case with everyone.
I buy Costco 380 sheet rolls for my part of the house and I have a bidet seat in my bathroom. I must be doing something wrong. I do have friends over often but I live alone so I don’t know what it is.
For the Airbnb, I buy individually wrapped rolls which are the 7th generation 500 sheets. I then take the remainder roll to use in my part of the house and put a fresh roll in the rental. Maybe all those partial rolls are playing with my mind.
Like you, I remove partial rolls and put a fresh roll on the spindle. I always leave loads of TP out (4 rolls) and show guests where the extra is stored.
@Keugenia If there’s a small amount left on the roll (like they did to you) I take it away and replace with a full one and leave an extra if they’re only there 2-3 days.
As you say this is a remote cabin 30 miles from the nearest store, I might assume this is a remote host who has a local cleaner who is falling down on the job a bit and the host isn’t aware or doesn’t care that much?
It’s the written reviews I was wondering about, if they mentioned any of the fails you’re finding. Star ratings are irrelevant to me- I have no idea why a guest gave a particular rating, it’s so subjective.
NO, you are not! You should review the place honestly. If it’s owner managed, they need a real wakeup about guest expectations and how failing to meet them affects ratings. If it’s a management company, the owner needs to know how abysmal they are.
If they’re new, I’d forgive the TP oversight, but not dirty oven, rusted fridge, or lights that don’t work. Have the linens been laundered?
