Thomas Cook company collapses

Nils Pratly wrote about causes in yesterday’s Guardian. He listed Brexit, risk averse banks, Airbnb, budget airlines, last year’s heatwave in Northern Europe, but with one towering above the others; TC’s huge pile of debt of £1.7bn that successive management failed bring down.

Exactly.

Buying out eight travel companies between 2008 and 2011 added to the firm’s debt pile and means that since 2012, the group has had to pay £1.2bn in interest and refinancing costs alone. “ Every year we have to sell 3 million holidays before we have our interest burden paid ,” Fankhauser has said.

We just had another unexpected heatwave in Northern California. Guests once again claimed AC wasn’t working simply because the 2,600 sq ft home could not cool fast enough to beat the 100 degree weather in two hours.

I grew up half of my life in this area and never once experienced so many extreme heatwaves in a single year. It’s getting worse every year and I’m glad we are finally moving on.

Ironically things aren’t yet worse here in far west TX. But in addition to the worse heat in many places it seems that people are less tolerant of the heat. I was in a large rental in Boston during some of their summer heat this year and other than the first night we frequently had to turn the Nest UP. We desert ladies didn’t need it so cold inside.

I a read statement recently where a woman said she will literally die if she doesn’t have AC and eat meat due to some health conditions. That’s why the average life span was 40 years old 100 years ago.

Yes the expectation now is that you keep your home as cool as a mega mall, movie theatre, or casino. It is really a terrible strain on the home owner battling a changing climate. Even with solid air conditioning unit, we never had the need for an industrial strength unit nor a swamp cooler in the San Francisco Bay Area before.

We have so many warnings on our listing about seeking other accommodations if you prefer to stay somewhere colder than 72 degrees inside. As well as, if you are unfamiliar with zoned cooling or how to practice responsible green energy usage. It really tries one’s patience.
