They booked for weekend and tried to hold a wedding

I thought I heard it all. Ran into some friends at a holiday party who are considering hosting rather than renting so we were talking a lot about Airbnb. They told me about their neighbor across the street. This is Arlington, MA which is a major bedroom community to Boston. So close to Boston it’s almost a neighborhood of Boston. This neighbor was frantically motioning my friend to “come see this”. It turns out her Airbnb listing got booked for a weekend and the guests then setup for a wedding in the back yard. Guests arrived, somewhere around 40. The host called the police and had it all stopped.

One more thing to tune your radar to.

Happens here all the time. I have that spelled out…No weddings, no events, no rehearsal dinners, no breakfasts, etc etc

How did she find out?

This is where the motion sensor cameras are being really useful.

People. I bet this kind of thing doesn’t happen to listings that advertise exterior security cameras.

I think the person also lives there. It’s a neighborhood of multi-family homes.

People think they are renting something and it’s theirs to do as they please.

Happened to me twice and I have info on our security camera in House Rules AND House Manual. They just don’t want to read.

I can’t imagine having the cops over to stop your event on your wedding day because you were greedy and didn’t want to pay. They were thinking $400 a day is perfect for their special day!

Cops don’t want to get involved and they don’t like Airbnbs. I am surprised they stopped the wedding .

That’s why I don’t rent for 2 days anymore. I did first few month to understand that all theybuse the house for is parties or events if they rent for few days . Less than a week at least

Agreed. I have a VERY nice couple in my place right now, in the area to visit their daughter’s family. They have been lovely to deal with … and yet, the day before they arrived the wife asked me if I could recommend a pet sitter because they were having a hard time finding one. Evidently the family festivities include a long day trip in New York City and they wanted someone to come walk and feed their dog. (I allow pets with a fee.) I had to break the news to her that I don’t allow people on the property not included on the rental agreement, or without my prior approval. Funny enough, I had already mentioned that already when I said I was willing to allow her family on the property, otherwise I don’t allow people on the property not on the rental agreement. I had already said it once!

Luckily for her I have a good friend in the area who was willing to do it, and whom I trust, obviously, but what if she hadn’t asked me? I don’t mean to malign the good people of the Catskills, but it is rural and poor and there is a lot of petty larceny going on out there. Lord knows who she would have found on craigslist. And how were they going to enter? I only have the one key in a lockbox!

Honestly, they really do think it is theirs to do with as they please.

I don’t know where they looked but you might consider recommending Rover.com if the issue arises again. They could find someone who does daycare in the area or along the route to the city.

I wasn’t going to recommend anywhere because they wanted someone to come and stay with the dog in my house. That was not going to happen. In the end, my friend is going to go over stay with the dog for a couple hours. That the only way it could happen - with someone I know and trust. The idea that they were going to arrange for this at all, without clearing it with me, is mind boggling.
