Stay at home order closing STRs - tourists go home

We have been locked down for over a week and yes we do quarantine anyone arriving here. We now have 4 cases locally, none from community transmission.

We are a major cruise ship destination port, and were expecting 1.5 million cruise passengers from May to September.

Someone commented on a local Facebook page today that we’re really lucky that it’s ramping up now, instead of late May or early June. During the summer we can get 25,000 passengers per day in a town of 33,000 with a small regional hospital with a small ICU.

I am in Massachusetts. Currently anyone entering Massachusetts is told (no real enforcement) to self quarantine for 14 days unless they are employed in an essential service. Consequently anyone with an in home set-up could not really accommodate out of state/country rentals. Personally I have closed through the end of May and won’t be surprised if that extends month by month. We rent within our own home and don’t have ensuite bathrooms. We have a couple of repeat guests with family concerns in town. We are contemplating blocking off one room for them and discontinuing use of one bathroom that they could use if they can enter the state. We probably won’t do that until late May or June.

That is a a lot of short term visitors who can bring in a lot of long-term germs.

The hits just keep on coming.

  • From Michigan (which has locked down orders that limit travel)
  • No reviews despite being on ABNB for 3 years.

I support your response to this person

I’m not sure I would worry about no reviews although a member for several years. I don’t have any reviews as a guest. I haven’t done much personal traveling for several reasons so although on Airbnb for years, I don’t have any reviews as a guest.

@Annet3176 I’ve hosted several guests whose profiles showed they had had accounts for several years, but had no reviews. When I see that, I just ask the guest- “So, I’m just curious, XX- I see you’ve been a member for awhile, but don’t have any reviews at all. Have you just never actually booked an Airbnb before?”
In all cases, it turned out to be quite innocent. They either had joined thinking they going to book a trip, but then weren’t able to get away, or they had had Airbnb stays before, but the host didn’t bother to leave a review, or they had stayed in Airbnbs, but with their partner and the bookings were made under their partner’s account. In all cases, the guests were good communicators who didn’t otherwise raise any red flags, and they all turned out to be wonderful guests.

I also don’t have any reviews (as a guest) and during normal circumstances I do the same as you suggest. I have the following in my house rules and assuming they didn’t see it, I reference it to them in my reply. In this particular case, I didn’t feel the need to go through that process.
