Service dog arrived without notice--right to be irked?

Well, then say that. Not just that they barked.

It’s been almost 3 weeks since you initially posted. I assume the stay finished without further incident and possibly/probably reviews have been submitted. Did the dog cause further problems or turn out to be an excessive barker? Did you get a good review from this guest?

SOMETIMES. Very big word. Think about it some more.

Hi all, Wow, I had no idea this post woud generate so much attention and opinions. I will not rehash here the merits of the law/policy, suffice it to say I learned a lot.

After I told the guest it was not cool to not tell me about the dog, she said: ā€œI hear you and I apologize, in hindsight I should have mentioned something. We’ve looked through the Airbnb terms of use carefully as it relates to service animals, and they make it clear that, because of the role service animals play in peoples lives, there is no need to make a mention of it. This is not a luxury - he serves a crucial need for me, and I genuinely am not able to travel without him. He’s professionally trained and doesn’t shed, and we’ll be sure to be more vigilant about the barking.ā€

I did as HostAirbnbVRBO suggested: On the airbnb platform, I said: You are of course within your rights to bring a service animal, and also not to give advance notice. I would have appreciated notice just because my housecleaner is allergic and now I’ll have to make other arrangements without as much advance time as would be convenient. I’m happy for you that you have this service dog and that it serves a crucial role for you. Thank you for your attention to the barking. How is your stay so far – everything as you expected?"

The guest warmed to that and said: ā€œI understand. If it helps, he is hypoallergenic (doesn’t shed) and as such doesn’t often induce an allergic reaction. Our stay so far has been really nice, very spacious and cozy. Thank you.ā€

There was no more communication other than my sending my typical check-out instructions. To my best knowledge, the dog did not interrupt anyone else’s stay (I have a 3-family, all airbnb’d). She left the place in fine shape. I asked the housekeeper to be extra vigilant with the vacuum and linens.

I wrote a brief review ā€œNAME was a fine guest.ā€

She did not leave a review.

And that’s all she wrote.

Curious - Why would certificates have made a difference when they aren’t required by Airbnb? @gypsy

And no puppy can be a service dog at that age?

Can’t believe CS let them get away with such an outrageous lie

I think the ā€œcertificatesā€ helped them to get a full refund.

It’s hard to imagine an 8 or 10 week puppy as having been trained for service, unless all that the recipient of its service needs is to look after the needs of the pup. But apparently a dog of any age can be trained by owner and get a ā€œcertificateā€.

I even put the photo of the ā€œcertificateā€ which had just been acquired by guest after cancellation on to the CS thread. I didn’t know how to direct CS to the guests insta page where it clearly showed the age of the puppies, ( and their frustration with house training them …).
