Poll: Would you come to a Hosts only conference?

Prostitution is legal as in many other countries. What is the problem ? Honestly, if I needed services, it would be so much more convenient if somebody handed me a card

If I wanted a card, I would take a card, but they don’t take NO for an answer. These people get in your face, refuse to let you pass, and shove them into your hand. Thousands of them litter the street.

So the problem isn’t what the card is for, you’d feel just the same if it was a card for a Jesus/the end is near/etc.

Unless Dave Matthews is the entertainment and there is free weed…no.

I’m kidding. I just find the idea of a cruise to be so revolting. It’s worse than prostitute cards in Vegas. At least in Vegas I can get in my car and drive away whenever I want.

I went on one once. Imagine being on a ship with a million other people (well, you know what I mean) with the AC not working and half the ship’s toilets not working. In July, in the Bahamas.

And guess what? Not even the suggestion of a refund

No, I don’t want Jesus freaks blocking my path shoving cards in my hands either.

What’s wrong with you?

Whatever happened to respecting someone’s space? You can do what you want to do, but don’t force your crap on me!

Blocking someone’s path is disconcerting. If I was alone, I would have been terrified.

So much for trying to be empathetic.

I think you’ve mistaken me for someone you saw in Vegas.

Yes, to a conference; no to Vegas. Vegas is my idea of hell, especially in the warmer months. Been there several times so I know whereof I speak.

Hi Tom,

I would find great value as a new AbNb host. Two thoughts. I believe many hosts are couples. Would be nice to have a reduced price for a second accompanying attendee. And second, after 30 yrs. attending tech conferences in Vegas. Unless one is a gambler I don’t see the appeal. It is not pedestrian friendly, everything is expensive and not all that easy to get to for east coasters. Just my two cents.

There I believe many hotels/casinos are smoke free now? I just did a quick google search:
https://www.lasvegaskids.net/news/smoke-free-hotels-las-vegas/

As far as Vegas goes, it would not be my favorite vacation destination, but it seems like a viable option price-wise (for many), and they do have lots of conference facilities. We have to remember why we are going, for the conference, not a dream vacation.

Maybe posters opposed to Vegas might offer suggestions on where else to have it that would be better, and still economical for the organizers and participants?

Welcome @stephenb

Good suggestion about couples, and I too have attended too many tech conferences in Vegas. The other locations I’d travel to for conferences include: Orlando, Dallas, Chicago, N.Orleans. They too have their own issues.

As non drinker / non gambler / non smoker it too has seemingly little draw. BUT with that said I’ve found that LV is relatively easier than the other locations (mentioned) because:

  1. Multiple (relatively) inexpensive flights make it easier to get to and from
  2. A large amount of conference and hotel space makes it easy to accommodate groups at lower costs

Despite all the negatives that have been vocalized herein, there are some positives that often get overlooked …

  • There are smoke free hotels off the strip.
  • Great Hiking, and excursions that have nothing to do with gambling or drinking.
  • Ability to attend numerous entertain venues

I’m not advocating for LV but I give @tom2 credit for at least opening a dialogue about it.

The one thing I can guarantee is that there is no location that everyone will come to consensus on. This being an international forum makes it even harder.

@jaquo, what line was that? I went on a cruise with Royal caribbean but it was a new ship. we had no pb. I still don’t like much cruises though because they herd you like cattle on shore and don’t have time to enjoy stuff. But I like it more like Vegas for example. id go in one I think… it depends how long it is cuz my work vacation is not much and I do go on vacation in other places.

Also to whomever asked. at MGM at least, 2 years ago people were smoking in the slot machine areas. I don’t know about the cards table or roulette cuz I don’t gamble but I had to pass by the slot machine to get to the elevators, to my room. And people were smoking.

the hiking and excursions are good in Vegas, only that I’ve never done it. that is an incentive for me to go then.

I was thinking more Mississippi River cruise; I too have been on the short alcohol-infused “tropical” cruise and once is enuf!

Hasn’t every AirBnB host?

@Keugenia Well played, my dear. Very well played!

I think if this comes together your hard working mods, @jaquo and @KKC should go for free.

I think the reality is that if you have the event in the US, you are likely to only get hosts from there rather than hosts around the world (your original ambition), unless you look at making some of the workshops/conference available through streaming and build in online functionality for audience participation (even then time zones would make this difficult).

I have to say that if I lived in the US and was considering attending I wouldn’t attend if it was in Las Vegas as it’s not the sort of place I would pay money to go to (I appreciate you may have reasons for choosing this location).

Hope this helps.

I have to agree, Vegas is low end. Denver comes to mind as a better option, almost anywhere else does too. San Diego is nice.

Somewhere easy to fly in and out of is a consideration. Vegas does have lots of flights and the airport is close in. Lots of places you’ll spend $100+ and an hour just getting to and from the airport if you are traveling solo. Ease of getting around once you are in town is a consideration. There are lots of moving parts. Looking at where other organizations have their meetings/conferences/conventions will tell you what places have the infrastructure. One of the nicest places I’ve been for a conference type event is, believe it or not, Salt Lake City, UT.

Aren’t you nice? I’d love to meet people here but it’s unlikely I’d go, even for “free.” Every time I leave home it costs me hundreds or thousands in lost revenue and with my very “modest” income and “downscale” life I have to use that time off for my fabulous travel plans. Now if it were an all expenses paid trip to a place I’d never been I might consider it.
