I’m thinking of purchasing new bedding for my Suite that will make my life easier when it comes to cleaning. If I bought duvets, would I still have to wash the blanket in-between each time?
Right now I provide a lightweight down comforter and then a fancy matching velvet/quilt blanket a the end of the bed but that’s a lot of load for my washing machine.
Have people changed their bedding due to COVID? What are you folks doing? Maybe provide some links to the bedding.
I have gone to a very inexpensive coverlet (thin quilted design) and two sham covers, no throw pillows. I have one of the lightweight fleece type blankets. I also have a large heavy quilt in the closet but it is summer so I haven’t dealt with changing that out. I’ll probably give it a duvet cover. I am in the process of changing out my pictures since the originals had fancier bedding. I have no product recommendation since I just find sales.
Long before covid I became convinced that everything on the bed that logically could be touched by the guest had to be washed. So yes to the blanket, sheets, duvet cover or what ever else you choose for the top layer. I don’t wash the mattress pad each time unless I see a stain or feel any dampness. I do wash the pillow cover under the pillowcase as well.
We have put away the custom bed coverlet and 2 decorative bed pillows, I always asked the guests to put them in the nearby cabinet which 99% of them did.
I sew the duvet covers from 2 flat sheets and use 2 22" zippers at the foot, and have also made 4 case sets of pillow cases from king flat sheets. We have down duvets which are much easier to put inside the duvet covers and take out than down alternatives. We use only Wamsutta, Ralph Lauren, Pima, 525 thread count 100% cotton sheets or higher. They have only gotten more soft and luxurious feeling with age. We air dry.
Have not changed my set up. White cotton sheets, towels and blankets. Always bleached.
Patterned light quilts and shams over 2 extra pillows (so you can prop yourself up to read). Washed substituting hydrogen peroxide for fabric softener.
I used to use Lysol laundry sanitizer for the color items but had horrible skin irritation when I used it on some of my own stuff. I am aware the jury is out on how effective hydrogen peroxide is in laundry for killing viruses and bacteria (as compared to surface cleaning) so I always dry on hot.
Resulting in an “incredible shrinking bedding” effect, but I’d rather minimize risk for me and my guests.
There are studies to support all sorts of cleaning protocols. The one common element (most important) is use of a detergent to break the ionic bonds with dirt, bacteria & virus so fabric will release them and water rinse them away.
We do not have comforters, only duvets, which ours are goose down. They go inside the duvet covers. And no the down duvets are not cleaned as they remain clean inside their removeable and washable covers. If they need cleaning its a professional cleaner that does it.
I think there is a thread here delineating the comforter / duvet line. I think of a comforter having decorative cover that is stitched thru the polyester fill/batting; and a (down) duvet is white High thread count plain cotton that also has stitchlines.
My rationale is that if the guest could logically easily touch it, then it should be washed. So a pillow case that’s open on one end doesn’t protect the zippered pillow cover so that gets washed. The blankets between layers might get bunched up or stuck in someone’s butt crack. Unless they are so raucous that the fitted sheet gets pulled off, or soaking wet, the mattress pad should be okay. And it’s completely covered by a freshly laundered sheet.
