Opinions needed on guest toiletries

Years ago I saw someone marketing such kits to timeshare owners. I think it bombed because the ads disappeared and I never saw anyone buy one.

Hi Meander,

This is my VERY FIRST post on ABB Host Community (be kind everyone if I break protocol, trial and error…just like something else we all know, oh yeah AirBnb).
You mentioned Meander that you supply full sized bottles of shampoo/shower gel, etc. In your hosting experience this has been well received? No one found it “gross”? I was doing that for a little while and then went to sample size high quality shampoo/conditioner/toothpaste packaged in tear open pouches. (I provide body wash in a pump dispenser in the shower.) It seemed few people would actually use the larger containers; I thought maybe they didn’t like the idea of touching a container strangers also used.
As a guest myself I’d feel that way, like “ew, I’m not touching that!” Just wondering…you never know. People are so different!

Why is this thread even still around? Can it be locked so it can rest in peace?

If you are concerned the guests will think it’s icky, there are nice dispensers that affix to the shower wall some hosts use. If you search the threads you can find examples posted. We use regular sized shampoo, conditioner, bodywash etc. and those are wiped down, it would be fairly obvious if they weren’t. If a guest has issue with it, there’s a Family Dollar a mile away they can get their very own bottle.

Edited to add, guests and hosts are more environmentally conscious these days and some believe that guests appreciate hosts’ attempts at reducing plastic waste.

I wipe all bottles of everything down with antibacterial wipes and I tell my guests that. I’m not the least bit interested in pandering to first-worlders’ “eeuw, that’s icky” mentality.

I get 300 and up a night and I wouldn’t buy that. You would need one for each bedroom and you may need to replenish multiple times per trip, or provide one pack per day. It’s just not enough product and it’s too expensive. I have long hair and i use way too much. Those small bottles last literally one use. I just refill bottles with sulfite free products so people with colored hair don’t have any trouble. I don’t supply toothpaste or toothbrush. People can go to the store for that. Shower cap is not essential. You can really get out of control with supplying stuff. Maybe we need Combs and hair barrettes too. Once people open the package, anything left over is trash. 6.99 per bedroom is a lot and I doubt people would stay at your place because of it, or return for it. People just go with the bottom line generally. It’s a nice idea but to wasteful. If I were going to do it, i could have my own bottles made through a promo company online with my own look for less than that I bet.

Hi
In my first couple of years of hosting, I’d buy little travel sized toiletries but found that they were just all being taken home. I find (I only rent out 1 room in my home) that most people do bring their own favourite shampoo etc with them. (Especially female guests)
I do now have wall mounted refillable body wash and shampoo that is used (mainly by male guests)
I have a large bath too and do find that people do use the bubble baths I provide (a normal sized container)
I do provide full sized toiletries also that I tend to top up so they never look pre used! I’ve had positive comments that I’m not using single use items.
I buy from TK Max as you can get very pretty bottles and then just refill them.

I’ve just spent 2 months is SE Asia and a lot of hotels now do not provide any single use items. A few times the products provided in the wall mounted containers were awful. That’s the price we pay to reduce the plastic mountain.
Luckily I had my own with me!

I think I am a little different from most here, in that I provide both. I have large pump bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash in the shower. These are decent quality brands, nothing fancy but not dollar store stuff, and they are kept full and wiped clean/disinfected after each guest.

I also have small single-size bottles in a basket along with lots of other toiletries for my guests to take if they forgot something.

Most guests use the dispenser bottles. A few use the single size bottles.

When I run out of single size bottles I will decide whether to continue providing them. I prefer the large pump bottles because it is cheaper for me, and better for the environment.

I left my own stockpile of hotel products at the house. Over the summer my cleaner said, you’re out of bar soap, do you want to get more or just provide the pumps?

I was kind of confused at first because I never bought any bar soap. Then I realized it was the hotel bars. Glad they got used, but no, I am not buying them!

Then over Christmas holiday I realized none of the big sized shampoo and conditioner in the house are right for my hair (I do “curly girl” method) so I went scouring through the little hotel bottles and gleefully lucked out, more than one of them were curly girl compliant so it saved me a special trip to the store.

When I replace what’s there, I will only be providing curly girl approved shampoo and conditioner. Straight hair guests will never know the difference and I will be a hero to those with twisted tresses

I buy these items in bulk from a hotel supplier who cuts me deals on bad boxes. 50 bucks a case for 500 toothbrushes with toothpaste. I recommend finding similar suppliers, not mine. $6 per guest, no way.
