I have a feeling we’re potentially getting into the duvet/blanket style debate here… the last time I saw a top-loading washing machine (a twin-tub I think it was called?) was in the 1970s at my grandmothers. She swore by it but damn me, it did chew up your clothes for sure. Yes they were clean but didn’t actually fit you any more or were a different colour entirely.
Ya know, I would but it’s saturday night and it’s already sad that I’m even discussing washing machines online without actually reading an article on the subject.
bahahah, sometimes we do need to get a life don’t we?!!!
I should be down cleaning my studio for a check in. My son and his friend walked to the beach but I was not invited!
So here I am on the forum discussing scum build up in front loaders!
maybe it’s the duvet debate. But to be honest I’ve genuinely never noticed the strong smell Kona is describing. I’ve definitely noticed a mouldy smell in some washers in shared flats but that’s from not keeping the seal clean, it’s not a faulty machine.
Ah yes the scum being deposited on your clothes is also from not doing service washes.
P{ossibly the UK has machines with far better engineering. Yes, I do think your appliances are more efficient because they have had to be. Smaller spaces and higher energy costs have demanded it. Just like you don’t drive Hummers or other gas guzzlers around when a Fiat three cylinder will do perfectly well.
Life? What is this thing of which you speak? Watch Narcos and you will embrace your mundane life, I promise! I am actually looking forward to a week-long booking coming up even though it has the potential to be disastrous. But at least I don’t have to do so much laundry.
Possible. Genuinely have never seen these problems here … though I suspect most of us know how to maintain our machines so it doesn’t happen. Every single person with a front loader on this thread (apart from the OP) knows to run a service wash and to leave the machine open to dry .
Most of the best washing machines are German, Japanese or Italian I think. Uk does a lot of good stuff but I don’t think washing machines are top of the list. But yes, your point stands. Most of Europe lives in smaller spaces and is less energy wasteful. Damn, let’s really not go there at the moment…
These things have not helped the stink machine at my sister’s place. All the cycles in the world cannot get rid of the scum that has built up somewhere in the inner bowels of the machine!
Yeah if services washes aren’t run monthly then over time the job becomes a bit to big to manage. We have this which works well for those situations:

I had a little laugh at that one. My parents own a top loader but then again they have a laundry room! In our Air we have a front loader combo like the one below. The dryer is awful though, it admits a horrible smell.
nice old fashioned maytag washer and dryers?
That’s what I have. Very low tech. On and off settings is about all. Work great.
Yes, this front loader ventless combo is a pain! Now that I’ve picked all the bits of clay dessicant out of the gasket, filter and drum, (see note about overzealous clueless guest that started all this), I still have to do all the regular maintenance — drain the filter area by unplugging a little hose, which spurts forth about 3 cups of water, and it’s so low on the washer you have to drain it into a very shallow pan, so OK now there’s water all over the floor. Then you twist out the filter, which releases another puddle, clean it and put it back. Of course wipe the gasket – all its crevices. Then pull out the detergent drawer, which never rinses clean, but has all this goopy detergent residue, and clean it. Then monthly run a cleaning cycle. Also monthly haul the thing out of the closet to get to the back and take off the hot and cold hoses (another drippy process), which requires a pair of pliers, to clean the intake filters. Sigh, I know it gets me bookings, but it’s evil.
So glad I have my ancient Kenmore toploader. When I travel it alsways astounds me how long front loaders take to do a wash. I’m sure my clothes are exhausted.
They now have wonderful top loading high-efficiency machines that don’t tear up your clothes either because there’s no inner agitator bar. Love mine!
You’d think that a front loading machine would drain fine, but I think due to the shape/design it’s just not possible for all the water to drain and so you have to keep the door open to avoid mustiness/odor.
But… where is the other yellow sock?
I don’t think this tops you, but my most recent guests borrowed blankets and pillows from my living room and made a pallet on their bedroom floor.
It was a daughter and father traveling together, and I’m assuming thru didn’t realize how small a full size mattress actually is until they saw it.
But I admit that now I’m worried they’ll give me less than 5 stars because my floor was lumpy.
What? How can a full size not be of enough for two ? Full size being what we call a double over here …
How funny! But surely you know that washing machines survive on a diet of socks? Black ones seem to be their favourite.
This has reminded me of an Eddie Izzard sketch “Washing your clothes”. Searched for a youtube link but see NBC has blocked it. What’s with that??
I know. I know.
I don’t know if this is a “culture moment” (it’s what my husband and i used to invoke early in our cross-Atlantic relationship when we were convinced the other was behaving weirdly, and it was an excellent face-saving/argument avoiding tactic) or just “Guests be cray-cray”/ don’t read the listing.
I’m trying to think happy thoughts until she posts her review. I’ve had 3 “seemed content and then left terrible reviews” in a row, so I may get my account suspended if she doesn’t give me 5 stars.
Wheefun.
