Hello fellow hosts. We recently started hosting at Airbnb. I wanted to know more about the breakdown of occupancy taxes and called their customer service. They did not have a breakdown and gave me links to few pages.
I need to know if any portion of it is going towards the local municipality accommodation tax (MAT).
Effective April 1, 2020, all short term rental stays in Vaughan are subject to a Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT) of 4%. Owners and brokerages must obtain a MAT registration number from the city in order to get a Short Term Rental License13.
Owners who operate without a brokerage like Airbnb must collect the 4% MAT from guests and remit it to the City of Vaughan themselves. The MAT must be itemized separately on the bill135.
If this is correct Airbnb is collecting the taxes on your behalf as a condition of its municipal “broker” license, as they do in British Columbia (where we operate).
