I think you were right. It isn’t a case of doing “normal things like eating on vacation”. They could checked in with you and then done those things. They were starting off expecting you to bend over and kiss their 
and they weren’t even there yet.
Check-in is like a job interview or first date (1) are you timely? (2) do you match your picture? (Etc)
I would have been ticked and wondering what disrespect the rest of their stay was going to bring about. It’s your house, you don’t need to share it with people that don’t appreciate it.
