I think that is where I was getting confused from watching the youtube video. I wasn’t sure if every guest would need to log in with my password, or just click on an icon like you said earlier. And will they have access to any of my other “google” accounts if it is linked to my gmail?? So much to learn…
Hi @cabinhost,
People are strange.
6 Mbps (megabits per second, just to be clear) is a little slow for streaming, actually. Could you get slightly faster speeds, and if so, do you have to pay much more? I have 8 Mps here, and apparently could get 16 Mbps, though I haven’t tried. But 16 Mbps is not much more expensive.
No no… It simply connects you to the cast. They won’t get to your accounts. The set up would be a one time thing and no password needed for the guests to connect.
Picture how it would go. Cabin guest goes to theater room. Turns on flat screen. Has their iPad with their own Netflix. Opens Netflix app. Sees chrome cast icon. Connects to chrome cast. Plays Netflix movie on big screen, but can control it from their iPad.
When movie is done, click stop.
Now one thing we find amusing is that if I start casting a chick flick, the boys can stop it and cast one of their comedy shows in its place. If I don’t want to listen the damn annoying family guy I can stop their show and play the chick flick again.
Chromecast works with Apple devices? I didn’t know that, I thought you needed an Apple TV! I think I’ll get one for my classroom this year so that the students can share their work if it works on chromebooks AND iPads, that’s great.
Do you use google classroom? Some of the teachers I sub for have that and it works really well for sharing work.
Not sure if 6 is capped in my area or not. But as long as regular internet usage is okay…then I don’t want to encourage streaming because the usage is capped. When I have used my laptop at the rental, the internet has been fine majority of time. Once in a while you may have to restart computer, but then it goes back to normal. So it’s possible the girl who said it was a little slow might have been streaming things…but she said it was fine.
It would just be an added expense with no real return. In some other rentals and motels the guests can barely even get a cell phone signal at all…so I feel lucky that overall the cell service is good there. Only a couple of guests have mentioned not being able to get hardly any cell service.
We do, just got chromebooks last year so we’ve taught ourselves the basics!
If you connect the teacher chrome book to the the Elmo you can project the work. Do you have a pull down projector screen in the room or a TV?
I provide no TV capacity. Perhaps I should, but I don’t really see the point. This is Boston! Leave the house. If it is raining, go to one of our world class museums. The people that I want staying here are doers. Did have one group of young men who wanted to watch a ball game, so they went to our local pub, watched the game, and met a ton of people. Had a great time. I have mumbled that maybe I could rustle up a second monitor if it is really important, and their rooms have about 300 books, of which at least 150 they are free to take when they leave. Anyhow, pretty much everyone is traveling with their own screen these days, so this was a choice I made to encourage the “right” kind of traveler for my home.
I added a TV to my listing because 1) an older friend of mine said he wouldn’t stay in a room without one. (Although I’m not sure he would stay in an airbnb anyway.) 2) to head off any possibility that a guest would want to watch my TV in the living area. I like chatting with guests but don’t like having the TV on very much. I’m not a tourist destination, just a road trip pit stop for 90% of my stays. At this point the TV has paid for itself and now if my computer monitor goes out I can hook up the TV as one.
Me either. Go out and see Hawaii.
I don’t have a TV in the living room either. We each have one in our offices which are not guest-friendly spaces.
And, as a layover, without a lot of tourist attractions nearby, this seems like a very practical choice to me. There are many kinds of hosts/neighborhoods, and there should be just the right place to stay on AirBNB. No one way is correct.
And isn’t that the beauty of it?
I have 2 wifi networks. One for the guests to use which runs at 50mbits max. Then I use the other one which runs at my full 75mbit. So they can use it at max speed and it will never effect me.
Yes, as long as you are using Chrome Browser OR an app like Amazon/Showtimes/Etc that is Chromecast compatible.
@cabinhost May I very politely say ‘step away from the computer’, you are in information overload!!
Any savy guest brings an HDMI cable with them, to hook up their laptop/tablet to your TV/projector already. We travel only with HDMI cables bc most hotels wifi make it difficult to use a Chromecast, another story for another day! It sounds like you already have an HDMI cable in your Projector room, I would tell your guests that asked about Netflix just that. They can hook up there laptop to your projector and watch whatever they want. I tend to agree with you about advertising Chromecast/ ease of streaming/Roko/Apple TV bc of your internet situation. I would only mention if they specifically asked.
To all of you people that don’t think guests should watch TV. I say poo poo to you!! The hubs and I love to end our nights with a glass of wine and maybe even 15 mins of whatever series we are currently watching. Its a nice unwind time and nice thing to enjoy together before bedtime.
Thanks. I will find out shortly if it is an HDMI cable. The only thing my partner said over the phone was "there is a line running from the projector into the mechanical room. And at the end of it there is an HDMI input. But the guest will need to bring their own equipment. Who knows…maybe I got that all confused - but will report back when I find out for sure. Maybe he meant “equipment” to be HDMI cable. But the projector is on top of the ceiling…so I guess the “line” must run across the ceiling and down the wall or something. Hmm…
If it is an HDMI cable equipment would mean laptop/xbox/player/etc.
So, I would really like to investigate what TV options you like to have in a space but am unsure of the etiquette of this forum. Should I start a new thread or usurp this one?
I am not particular about a thread going off topic at all…as I am very guilty of doing that myself. But if you want to take a general poll then I would start a new thread. But if you are only interested in azreala’s response then no need to do it. I wouldn’t mind if you started a poll. I prefer a bedroom with TV…but much of that has to do with price point and traveling. If I am on a budget then i will be fine without tv…and I would never suggest a host get one when their price doesn’t reflect it.
