Need Help to Improve My Living Room

Hey everyone,

I am reaching out for some advice on how to improve my living room. At the moment, the space feels a bit dull and lacks any real personality. The layout is okay and everything functions fine but visually it feels very plain and uninspiring.

The walls are a light grey color and I have a basic sofa set along with a standard coffee table. There is no real theme or decor in place yet, and I think that is part of why it feels so empty. I also feel like the lighting could be better ,it is not terrible but it definitely does not add much warmth or atmosphere to the room.

I am hoping to get ideas on how to bring the room to life. I do love some suggestions on color schemes or whether adding an accent wall would help. I am also interested in rearranging the furniture if it helps the flow and I do appreciate any affordable decorating tips maybe with plants, artwork, sofa or rugs anything else that can make the room feel more cozy and inviting. Lighting suggestions are welcome too like whether floor lamps or smart bulbs could make a big difference.

If you have done something similar or have any ideas that might help, I do love to hear from you. Thanks so much in advance.

Some photos or a link to your listing would help others to give useful advice. Without a visual, it’s not really possible to suggest seating arrangements, flow, etc.

In general, having table and/or floor lamps will improve lighting. And when you have bland colors, like grey and beige, on walls and in furnishings, picking accent colors to use for throw pillows, washable throw rugs, wall art, etc. will liven things up and make your photos stand out. The accent colors themselves aren’t that important, that’s more a matter of personal taste. But very light and very dark colors will show dirt more easily than mid-range and patterns.

I’m a fan of stretched canvas prints on the walls.

Depending on the size of the room, just picture (no pun intended) how many prints you want to fit on each wall. Smaller prints can make the room appear larger, bigger prints attract focus if you want to just have a couple stunning artworks or photos.

I custom order all what I want for our house myself. Nothing that we have on our walls is of the shelf. I either took the photo or created the illustrations but there are plenty of free sources online to find something that suits your taste that you are allowed to print for yourself.

The prints are not even very expensive and make a huge difference to the ambience.

I suck at decorating and cannot recommend anything relating to that but prints on the walls make all the difference for me.

An accent wall can be a good idea to kick it up a notch, or just painting the baseboards in an accent color. In my previous house, I had painted the living room walls a grey-brown taupe, and the baseboards teal blue. It looked great.

Thank you so much for the thoughtful response

You were absolutely right photos would definitely help and I will work on uploading a few soon so you can better see the space and layout. I really appreciate the ideas on lighting and using accent colors to bring the room to life. I had not considered the impact of canvas prints before but your suggestion makes a lot of sense. I love the idea of using custom or meaningful artwork, it sounds like a great way to add personality without spending too much.

Also, the painted baseboards with teal blue sound beautiful and really creative. I am definitely leaning toward trying an accent wall or experimenting with color on smaller features like trim. Thanks again for taking the time to share all these tips.it is already helped spark a few ideas and I am excited to get started.

Add some prints and plants, that should do it. If you’re on the coast, get nautical or coastal prints, if you’re in the countryside get landscape prints, etc. You can also add a few throw pillows to get a pop of color and had a flowering plant as the centerpiece of your coffee table.
