These were commonplace in the last century - in Europe and in Morocco. (Possibly in other places in Africa but Morocco was as near as I got to Africa).
My dad used to tell me that he thought that the squat loos were far more hygienic than the type we are accustomed to because no part of your body actually touches anything - it doesn’t touch any germ-laden porcelain.
I’m inclined to agree. Plus, regular uisage doesn’t half keep yer leg muscles in trim.
As the only female in the house, I’m very grateful that my husband sits and therefore all the toilet- using sons sit - they are tall, and only going to get taller, so for me it’s not just aim it’s splash effect.
I have never, BUT… a family friend is a modern artist, and she had her studio in a barn that was but blessed with modern conveniences.
She was showing us around, and pointed to a series she had been working on - She explained her process was to take a shape and repeat it and explore it. Large triangular shapes on stalks were repeated in many canvasses. She said, with a twinkle in her eye, that it took her a long time to realize that the source of her inspiration was the pee bottles she used when she had to go but couldn’t leave the studio.
I hope to one day see one of her pee bottles in a museum.
Hi everyone I’m Peter Gentlehart’s partner and can add a personal, but hopefully illumiatory perspective. When I was younger I used to, on ocasion, need to pee in the night. I coudn’t understand why I kept fainting! Long story, but the outcome was I had low blood pressure. Peeing made it even lower standing up. The excepted wisdom was to sit and this reduces the risk of fainting. Worked a treat. At night I now pee sitting and then return to my slumbers. It does of course help with any clean up operation.
