Luggage storage box - material and dimensions

A 4’ long backpack?! Maybe he meant a duffle bag…I’ve seen those but a 4’ long backpack would be pretty close to dragging on the ground or at least interfering with the back of your legs as you walk.

Oops, erase. I just Googled it and apparently there are backpacks at that length. Ugh.

Well, a 4 foot long anything bag, really. I figure that if I’m going to custom build a luggage storage box (which will probably last forever), I should make sure it can reasonably contain anything that guests might want to put in it.

A locker that big would hold their mother-in-law, plus the luggage!

So you think a 4 ft long locker is long enough?

I suspect that it is. In fact, you might start renting this luggage storage space out to other travelers who don’t like the rail depot and make more money than the AirBNB! [Yes, that is a joke.]

I suspect that I could not compete with the railway “cloak room” (that’s what they call the left luggage office) on price. They charge like Rs. 20 a day. (I had a photo of the charge sheet somewhere, but can’t find it now.) Then, again, their storage area is reputedly rat and cockroach infested. I left that little detail off my guest guide. Don’t tell my guests.

Update: I got a quote for the aluminium luggage box. Rs 49,000 (USD 748) without anodizing and Rs. 59,000 (USD 900) with an anodizing finish. I’m not sure what’s with the anodizing - I assume it’s purely cosmetic.

I’m not going to go with this. It’s way too expensive, and I have doubts whether the lady in question knows what she is doing. And she’s not a specialist in this area - she runs some kind of modular kitchen custom manufacturing outfit. And we had quite a lot of difficulty making her understand what we wanted, which is never a good sign.

I’m thinking Rs 20,000 or below would be reasonable. It does depend to some extent on the level of finishing. I’d certainly prefer something machine-made and nicely finished rather than something put together by hand.
