Just completed my first hosting stint - reactions to condition in which the guests left my house?

You really think the issues mentioned would be enough to stop you hosting ? You really think they’re that bad?

@HelenSpinelli you are very lucky so far  til it bites you - watch out.

Thanks so much for the advice and I have increased my security deposit because of my concerns. I guess I am not sure I shall rent my new cottage while I am 500 miles away though I will have an on-site manager since the area of Quebec we are building in is one we have been visiting for many years and have lots of friends. We shal see, best!

Let me rephrase then: I am not attempting to look considered, I am attempting to be considered.

All I did was post in an internet forum to get opinions from others with more experience than I.

When one does not have experience, how is one supposed to know if their views are justified? Of course I formed an immediate opinion as we assessed and cleaned up, but I had no barometer with which to gauge how common what we found to be. Maybe all of it was totally standard, maybe I had a guest that had caused more damage than is to generally be expected. I just didn’t know.

As of now, between the hours burned prepping the house and then bringing it back to its original state, yes. Maybe in the end, I’m just too neat a person to be a host. Oh well. You live and you learn.

Apologies, I hate pedantry but find I’m mildly irritated by your correction which is grammatically incorrect. Considered is a verb; you cannot be considered.

You’re also missing the point of my comment. Yes take advice, no don’t write in the review: I asked everyone and this is what they said. You don’t need to tell everyone that you asked for advice from fellow hosts it sounds like we’re running some secret sect.

That final question was directed at cabinhost.

Don’t get me wrong your guests weren’t perfect, but you ARE a new host and in my opinion you’re getting slightly led up the garden path as there isn’t a host on here who would stop hosting because of the reasons you’ve stated. Therefore I was asking cabinhost to confirm if it really was as bad as all that .

I wasn’t sure before if you really meant to direct this to me, but since you clarified it was meant for me. The answer is no that would not stop me from hosting.

I think the guy deserved his review. The guy is a host himself, and he didn’t communicate to his friends to respect the property. Scratched pans etc. are going to happen unless guests don’t have forks to eat with. Yep…guests will do a half ass job of washing dishes, etc. The boxers…toss in the trash, no biggie. Those things can be looked at as guests being guests.

But unscrewing shower heads, unscrewing ceiling lights, leaving BBQ stains on rugs, using flower pots as ashtrays, needing to repaint concrete from dragging things across, all kitchen surfaces covered in a sheen of oil, etc. is disrespectful.

I would never want to host this guest, so I am glad the OP left a detailed review. I can only imagine how he would have left the place if he wasn’t an Air host himself.

I’ve had this a few times and I think the standard of Airbnb guest is slipping. This sort of guest occurs more & more now. I would leave them a bad review but not a awlful one in which they won’t use Airbnb again as to some hosts this might only be annoying rather then ‘I’m never hosting again’ sorta thing. Just for laughs I’ve had three pairs of lacy black kinkers & stained men’s boxes.

First, the guy himself may not have been the one who moved light bulbs or unscrewed showers. He may know nothing about it…a houseful of 30 yr old boys is a recipe for disaster.

A bad review does not have to read like one…think of the way people write letters of recommendation which aren’t.
Just wait two weeks and say something like sweet boys but have a lot to learn about how to keep house: I felt like calling their mothers when they left.

I have noticed that the wheels on suitcases are leaving weird scuffs on my hardwood floors, and since I meet everyone, I just think it is the wheels. Spend a bit and get a piece of indoor/outdoor carpeting for your porch. My guess is that painted concrete and heavy bags don’t go well together.

Yep… I’d head right over to Costco or check out Amazon for a cheap set ASAP!

$50.00 Cleaning fee for an entire house with 6 Guests ?? Are you serious
You need to up your cleaning fee . It should be at least $150-200.00 . Thats what a Pro cleaning team would charge . Also , you may want to think about not have as many guests stay . Maybe do a Max of 4 guests in total . I know I wouldn’t clean for $50 Bucks and a Nice Dinner . LOL
If you add to your listing that the property must be returned in the condition it was in during the arrival , this will put guests on alert . Dirty Boxer shorts and all , I have had a few guests leave behind bras, panties , Socks ,stockings ,Jocks Etc . Sometimes they get lost in the bed clothes , left on the floor by accident . It happens . I even had a very expensive set of women’s La Perla underwear $$$ left behind by a perfect guest , I waited to see if she would miss them when she got home , as I didn’t want to seem like a creep in messaging her about them . Never heard back from her , so into the garbage bin they went .
