Is airbnb going bust - if it can't pay hosts on time - it's technically bankrupt!

Is #AIRBNB GOING BROKE?

Brian - it’s about time your company came clean on its cash flow problems - the fact is you can’t pay hosts on time - I’m now two payments in default (one 3 weeks overdue and one two weeks overdue and both still unpaid) and your staff are still unable to give a definate future payment date - ‘MAYBE SOME TIME IN THE FUTURE’ AIN’T GOOD ENOUGH!

Paying AIRBNB support staff to lie and stall about these cash flow problems, and to pretend payments have been made to hosts, when in fact they have not - is not a good business partner strategy with Airbnb hosts!

NEW HOSTS - DON’T SIGN UP WITH AIRBNB - I’VE BEEN WITH THEM 8 YEARS AND THE PAYMENT DELAYS ARE WORSE NOW THAN THEY HAVE EVER BEEN.
The ‘we pay hosts within 24 hours of guest arrival’ is a false promise!

IN BOTH THESE HOST PAYMENT DEFAULT CASES THE AIRBNB GUESTS PAID AIRBNB THE FULL ACCOMODATION FEES PLUS AIRBNB’S NOW VERY EXPENSIVE SERVICE FEES - OVER 12 MONTHS AGO! - SO WHAT HAS AIRBNB DONE WITH THEIR MONEY?

Is #AirbnbBUST?

@AirbnbHelp - UTTERLY USELESS - THEY HELP NO ONE - JUST AN AIRBNB PR ENTITY!

@bchesky

@Airbnb

You do know this forum is completely unrelated to Airbnb, right? This is just a bunch of independent hosts discussing issues with hosting, helping each other out. Tagging chesky on here will get you exactly nothing. Lol

As for your complaint, try checking your payout setup, it’s something on your end.

I’m having zero issues with 4-6 payments a week. Payments are being transferred exactly 24 hours after the guest checks in. And with PayPal, the cash is instantly available.

Same here, I don’t have anything issues getting paid in time.

Good to hear - that’s your experience - mine over 8 years is different - perhaps there is value in hosts comparing experiences - even if you can’t see it.
No problem with the PAYOUT SETUP - worked ok both before and once after these two airbnb payment defaults.
My message here is a copy of a social media message previously sent to Chesky. LOL!

I have also never had an issue getting paid, but it isn’t fair to tell hosts who aren’t receiving payments that it’s something on their end, which is exactly what Airbnb tells them. Sometimes it is, but I have read hundreds of posts over the years from experienced hosts who have checked everything on their end and it’s entirely on Airbnb’s end, nothing has changed with the payout info they have been using for years, they haven’t missed updating ID, tax info, or anything like that.
And it’s evident that it’s not on the host’s end, because usually after months of wrangling with Airbnb, they finally get paid.

I remember one post on this forum where Airbnb had been giving the host the run-around for months- “It must be a problem with your bank”," It must be a problem with your payout info", “We have a team looking into it”, until she finally contacted the several guests whose bookings she had never been paid for. The guests called Airbnb to ask what happened to the money they had paid, as their nice host, with whom they had a great stay, said she had never gotten paid for their stays. Like a miracle, all the money Airbnb had been sitting on suddenly appeared in her account the next morning.

Airbnb definitely hangs onto millions of dollars in payouts owed at any given time. But it always seems to be the bigger payouts, at least according to host posts I’ve read. It’s when a payout is thousands, rather than hundreds, that Airbnb likes to use it to pad their coffers for the shareholders to see.

It’s either that or sheer incompetence on Airbnb’s end.

in march there were layoffs at the company:

Hospitality firm Airbnb has laid off 30% of its recruiting staff this week even as the company reported its first profitable year in 2022, having a net income of $1.9 billion.

it’s obvious they’re trying to keep the belt tight for a while.

Thanks Muddy - your posts are always most helpful - I got the client to complain for their not paying the host but AIRBNB just lied to them and said it was paid citing the information in UPCOMING PAYMENTS - which sets out the payment schedule but which schedule was not completed in respect of my two unpaid cases - so this tactic no longer seems to work unfortunatley.

Effectively there is no functional procedure for hosts to complain - AIRBNB SUPPORT STAFF REFUSE TO HELP AIRBNB HOSTS GET PAID - ALL THEY DO IS PASS THE BUCK - PASS THE BUCK - PASS THE BUCK!

It’s a gross insult to hard working hosts running up big staff and utility bills for large AIRBNB groups to refuse to even check if the host has been paid - all they do is pass the buck - obviously AIRBNB senior staff are directing them to do this - LIE - STALL - DELAY - but never consider the HOST’S payment default complaint on its merits.

HOW MUCH MORE PROOF DO YOU NEED THAT I HAVE NOT BEEN PAID!!!

Hi Alex,

To be fair, I don’t think it’s that the front-line CS reps “refuse” to help hosts get paid (altho I agree that most of them generally act like robots, have poor training and don’t know policy, and are often completely unhelpful) , it’s that, as you say, this is how they are instructed to respond by the higher-ups.

So while I get incredibly frustrated with CS when they send useless links to help pages and don’t seem to have even read or comprehended the issues hosts outline, I don’t think they really have any power when it comes to things like getting paid. All they can do is pass it onto the finance dept.

I agree Muddy - they have zero power to correct a host payment default - in fact they seem to be prohibited from even informing the HOST PAYMENTS section of the missing payout so that it can be corrected.
As I say - hosts with missing payouts - effectively have no functional complaints procedure available to them - it’s all just a charade - a ‘pretend to help’ support staff which in reality is powerless to help.

Like others, I have never had a problem with payouts - and that’s several times a week, two apartments and over several years.

Since 2015 my bank information at this end has always been the same and with no problems,

Airbnb ‘going broke’ and hosts not getting payouts are two different issues and it seems erroneous to equate the two.

It seems that the OP expects more from the Airbnb advertising platform than most hosts do. Airbnb is there to advertise your rental, not to run your business.

That’s why experienced hosts at this forum advise against ‘putting all your eggs in one basket’.

Airbnb may go broke one day, the internet might have a meltdown one day, STRs might be outlawed one day - who knows what might happen?

Who would have thought a few years ago that a virus would almost bring the world to a standstill? But covid did.

No one knows what the future holds which is the best reason to be completely in control of your own business and not rely on third parties.

While you bring up good points, being in control of your own business is pretty hard to do if you are dealing with a platform that collects the guests’ money but then doesn’t release it to the host and stonewalls you. I’m sure we’d be pretty upset, too, if Airbnb owed us thousands of dollars for guests who had come and gone months ago and Airbnb just kept giving us the run-around.

I am not well - I’m intensely frustrated and most upset!
ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS CHECK “COMPLETED PAYOUTS” - If LUMA and RENAN are NOT listed there their payments have NOT been processed or SENT - any sane person could check this in one minute - so why do you need more time to ‘inestigate’ - when you know as well as I know that AIRBNB havew NOT paid me for hosting these reservations - I now demand not only the total of the missing payments but compensation for stress and time spent on trying to get paid >>>

HERE IS ALL THE ‘INVESTIGATION’ YOU NEED TO DO! >>>>>

I HAVE SENT 40+ MESSAGES OVER 3 WEEKS!
15 Airbnb support staff members have been allocated to my complaint but not one in the 15 has taken any action to help me get paid - all 15 should have their jobs at AIRBNB terminated - they are clueless and dysfunctional!

WHY HAVE MY TWO OVERDUE PAYOUTS NOT BEEN SENT?
WHEN WILL THEY BE SENT?

AIRBNB IS TOTALLY DYSFUNCTIONAL - SUPPORT STAFF DON’T KNOW HOW TO HELP A HOST GET PAID!
WHEN WILL YOU REQUEST THE HOST PAYMENTS SECTION TO PAY ME?

PROOF MY PAYOUTS HAVE NOT BEEN PROCESSED OR SENT:

1: NEITHER “LUMA” OR “RENAN” RESERVATIONS ARE LISTED IN THE AIRBNB “COMPLETED PAYOUTS” LIST SO THAT IS 100% UNEQUIVOCAL PROOF THAT THE PAYOUTS HAVE NOT BEN PROCESSED OR SENT AND THAT I HAVE NOT BEEN PAID.

Your guest already paid all of the reservation fee. Let me look into it what caused this problem alright?

So EARL you are AIRBNB support staff number 17 to look at my complaint about two missing host payouts - I don’t care what caused the problem - I just want a solution - I want to be paid - I have waited long enough - I demand that I be paid TODAY - My guest LUMA paid her fees in 2022!
What does AIRBNB do with this money?
It should be held on trust as per the promise to the AIRBNB member who paid the Airbnb ACCOMODATION fees and as per the fake AIRBNB promise to pay hosts within 24 hours of guest arrival.

Obviously AIRBNB is having cash flow problems - this is the third time this has happened to me this year and we are still only at JUNE!

Can I recommend one way AIRBNB save some money and conserve their funds - do NOT employ 17 support staff to delay and stall a solution to an AIRBNB host’s two missing payments as they have done in this case!

SO WHEN DO I GET PAID my missing R11.065,54 PLEASE?

WHY CAN’T YOU JUST INFORM THE AIRBNB HOST PAYMENTS SECTION OF THE MISSING PAYOUTS - REMIND THEM THAT THE AIRBNB PROMISED PAYMENT WITHIN 24 HOURS OF GUEST ARRIVAL HAS NOW PASSED by 21 days for LUMA and 15 days for RENAN - AND REQUEST THEM TO PAY ME TODAY?

WHY NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM - INSTEAD OF CONSTANTLY STALLING AND DELAYING - WHEN YOU DESTROY THE TRUST OF YOUR HOSTS - YOUR MAIN BUISNESS PARTNERS - YOU EVENTUALLY DESTROY THE BUSINESS!
Alex

Chloie had to “investigate” - now you EARL have to “investigate” - no doubt the next support staff after you - number 18 support staff on this single complaint - will also have to “investigate” - how long is this absurd and insulting nonsense - this pointless charade - going to continue?
PAY ME TODAY PLEASE!

YOU CAN PAY ME TODAY AND STILL DO YOUR FOREVER “INVESTIGATIONS” - WHY SHOULD I CONTINUE TO BE STALLED AND DELAYED NOW THAT YOU ADMIT THE FACT THAT I HAVE NOT BEEN PAID?
WHY SHOULD MY 21 DAY LATE AND 15 DAY LATE PAYOUTS CONTINUE TO BE HELD UP BY YOUR ‘POLICY REVIEWS’ - YOU CAN PAY ME NOW AND DO YOUR ‘INVESTIGATIONS’ AND ‘POLICY REVIEWS’ FOR THE NEXT DECADE.

And what you say is a lot of nonsense - my two payments were not processed and sent because a decision was made by AIRBNB HOST PAYOUT officials to delay my payouts - for cash flow reasons - we all know that AIRBNB systematically delays big payments to help with increasingly difficult cash flow problems - all you need to do is tell them to cease this appalling business practise of punishing big payment hosts - the very business partners any normal and sane company would protect rather than punish - but you do not need to continue to delay and stall on my 15-21 day overdue payouts - there is no reason why you can’t request that I be paid TODAY PLEASE!

I have 21 future reservations booked by AIRBNB - Why do they treat the best and busiest AIRBNB HOST in Rio de Janiero so badly!

I am arguably AIRBNB’s best business partner and fees generator in Rio de Janerio - the top city for tourism in South America - what commercial logic compells AIRBNB management to treat me so badly - ignore my countless messages about missing payouts - employ 15 -17 dysfunctional support staff to lie, stall, and delay in regard to my missing payouts - deliberately withhold my payouts for weeks on end with no promise of a payment date !

Please help me get paid - I cant carry on much longer without income to pay utility bills and today I have a large group of 10 AIRBNB guests arriving for 4 days - I can’t pay AIRBNB UTILITY bills without AIRBNB income - Thank you Alex

EARL - STOP STALLING ON MY PAYOUT - WHAT A STUPID SUGGESTION - IF THE PAYMENTS HAVE NEVER BEEN PROCESSED OR SENT HOW CAN THAT BE BECAUSE OF ANY PROBLEM WITH THE PAYOUT METHOD?

NO AUTOMATED AIRBNB PAYMENTS EMAILS WERE SENT - NO LISTINGS OF LUMA AND RENAB ARE IN “COMPLETED PAYOUTS” - ANY IDIOT KNOWS THAT MEANS THE PAYMENT WAS NOT PROCESSED OR SENT - ALMOST CERTAINLY INTENTIONALLY BECAUSE OF AIRBNB’S NOTORIOUS CASH FLOW PROBLEMS - THAT YOU ARE DOING A VERY POOR JOB OF TRYING TO COVER UP.

BESIDES I HAVE RECEIVED ONE AIRBNB PAYMENT THIS WEEK - IN RESPECT OF AIRBNB GUESTS (GUEST KANDICE) AFTER LUMA (21 DAYS OVERDUE) AND AFTER RENAN (15 DAYS OVERDUE) - SO HOW CAN THERE BE ANY PROBLEM WITH THE PAYOUT METHOD - IN FACT IT WORKED PERFECTLY WELL THIS WEEK - YOU KNOW THERE IS NO PROBLEM WITH THE PAYOUT METHOD - YOU SIMPLY SUGGEST THIS AS A FALSE FLAG TO FURTHER STALL MY 15-21 DAY OVERDUE PAYOUTS - I’VE BEEN AN AIRBNB HOST FOR 8 YEARS - DON’T BORE ME WITH THESE PATHETIC, AMATUERISH, STALL AND DELAY TACTICS!

ARE YOU GOING TO GET ME PAID OR PRETEND TO BE DOING SOMETHING USEFUL BUT IN FACT DOING NOTHING OF ANY VALUE TO RESOLVE THIS HOST PAYMENT DEFAULT?

I DEMAND THAT YOU GET MY PAYOUTS PROCESSED AND SENT TODAY - I HAVE ALREADY HELPED OUT AIRBNB WITH THEIR CASH FLOW PROBLEMS WYH THESE 21 AND 15 DAY PAYOUT DELAYS - I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO CONTINUE TO SUBSIDIZE THIS MULTI BILLION COMPANY SIMPLY BECAUSE IT FALSELY OVERSTATES ITS CASH RESERVES TO ITS BANKERS AND INVESTORS - CASH IN BANK THAT CONTRACTUALLY SHOULD HAVE BEN PAID TO HOSTS IS NOT AUTHENTIC CASH IN BANK - ITS PRETEND CASH IN BANK!

SO WHEN DO I GET PAID - IS YOUR AIRBNB SALARY DELAYED BY 21 DAYS - OR DO YOU EXPECT TO BE PAID PUNCTUALLY BY AIRBNB?

WHY CAN’T I BE PAID TODAY - I’VE DONE MY BIT TO HELP OUT WITH AIRBNB CASH FLOW PROBLEMS - I NEED THIS MONEY ASAP TO PAY MY MASSIVE STAFF AND UTILITY BILLS - ONE PAYOUT IN THREE IS NOT ENOUGH TO COVER THE MONTHLY BILLS?

WHEN DO I GET PAID PLEASE?

Hi Alex,
This is Earl, let me investigate on your case since the escalations always end up on us. Don’t worry because I’ll look into it and upon checking your payout, yes it still hasn’t pushed through. Your guest already paid all of the reservation fee."

So EARL you acknowledge that my two missing payouts “still hasn’t pushed through” - so WHY ARE YOU NOW REFUSING TO HELP ME GET PAID?
Are you paid by AIRBNB to stalll and delay HOST payouts - with an extra monthly bonus for a false flag lie to a host like ‘maybe your payout method’ is the reason you have not been paid?

You are obviously not paid to help hosts with missing payouts - because you have had my file for a full day and although you know that these are authentic 16 and 22 day AIRBNB HOST payout defaults - you still haven’t lifted a single finger to remedy the default and get the host paid?

So “since the escalations always end up on us” - what exactly have you done, EARL, to ‘escalate’ a solution to these 16 and 22 day old AIRBNB PAYOUT DEFAULTS?

If you are in the ‘escalations’ department - you should know how to ‘escalate’ a solution to my missing payouts - if you don’t know how to ‘escalate’ a solution - you are incompetent - unfit for purpose - and should not be working in the escalations department!

WHEN DO I GET PAID my missing R11.065,54 THAT AIRBNB RESOLUTIONS TEAM ACKNOWLEDGE I “haven’t been paid yet” AND in respect of which EARL of ‘AIRBNB escalations’ admits that although my missing payouts “still hasn’t (been) pushed through (yet)” - but in respect of which Earl of escalations has sat on the file for a full day and doesen’t seem to know how to ‘escalate’ (doesnt know how to help a host get paid for 15-21 day old missing payouts!)?

WHEN DO I GET PAID my missing R11.065,54 Earl?
I DEMAND PAYMENT TODAY!

There is only one solution I am interested in - honour your company promise to pay my 16-22 day overdue host fees - you know I have not been paid but you refuse to rectify the position - do your fictitious “deep investigation” (which is just your fake cover for AIRBNB CASH FLOW PROBLEMS THAT ARE OBVIOUSLY SO SERIOUS ARBNB STILL CAN’T PAY ME NOW AFTER A 16-22 DAY DELAY ) if you must - but your defective internal procesures have nothing to do with me - why should this imaginary “deep investigation” further delay my payment that you have acknowledged I am entitled to and which should have been paid 16-22 daya ago - how am I supposed to pay utility bills next week? - utility bills run up by large groups of AIRBNB guests on the basis that I would be paid my host fees.

Alex, while I understand how frustrated you are and why, the wording and tone of your interactions with CS is rude, insulting, pointless, and the exact opposite of how you need to communicate in order to get a successful resolution. Yelling at CS reps in all caps, calling them incompetent, saying “I demand” does nothing to resolve your case faster and if I were a CS rep in receipt of those messages, I would not be inclined to help you, either. It makes you come across as crazy. I suspect you have gone through 17 reps because none of them want to have to deal with you and therefore pass it on.

AIRBNB have allocated 17 support staff to lie - delay - and stall me over two missing payouts - not one of them has lifted a finger to remedy the admitted host payment defaults - I have had to re-explain the two misisng payout problems to 17 successive support staff - as soon as I have briefed one staff member he or she is replaced with another - this can only be a deliberate stall and delay tactic - I have had to send over 50 messages - first politely and when that doesn’t work - increasingly blunt and direct messages - it is immensely frustrating - and it is driving me crazy!

AIRBNB guests run up massive utility bills in a 6 bedroom air conditioned harbourside mansion - how am I supposed to pay these bills when AIRBNB refuse to send me the money their members have already entrusted them with to pay to the host fees.

We should not have to beg for 22 days for a promised overdue contractual payment - it is an entitlement and if denied it it legitimate to demand it.

Jaquo - This forum is presumably all about sharing host experiences and I’ve just shared mine - everyone who has read this now knows a little more about the extraordinarily defective and complex internal procedures AIRBNB adopt to block and frustrate host complaints - particulaly host complaints about missing payouts - just because it’s not happening to other hosts now - does not mean to say it will or cannot also happen to them in the future.

The value of my experience is to quickly call out an obvious stall and delay tactic - so they are not distracting the host from the main point - fixing unpaid host payments.

Sure different people have different styles - different strokes for different folks - but I can tell you this - polite does not work with these people - it was only my blunt and direct manner and positioning that finally compelled them to acknowledge (after 20 days) that the payouts were in fact missing and unpaid - but unfortunately that still did not mean I would be paid - they continue to stall and delay and not pay - their treatment of hosts is appalling.

Hopefully my experience will make other hosts aware of what problems can arise when payouts go missing - which can happen to any host.

While we sympathize with your plight, there ain’t nothing the folks on this forum can do to solve it. I wish you a speedy closure to this issue.

Thank you PitonView - I did not share my experience on the basis that anyone here can solve my problem - I have zero expectation of that - all I am saying is that AIRBNB treatment of hosts is now so cavalier that they can lie (several staff members said I had been paid refering to the payment schedule information in UPCOMING PAYOUTS) - stall and delay - a non disputed host payout by 16 to 22 days and even when finally forced to admit - ‘yes we have not paid you’ - they still refuse to remedy the host payout default and pay it - this has happened to me a host of 8 years experience with the busiest host business in my city - no one here can be certain it cannot happen to them in the future.
On the plus side - airbnb’s erratic payment history - has forced me to consider other options and this week I got my first big booking (9 days) with no reviews from VRBO.

We really don’t require reading a half page of all caps rants to know that Airbnb uses stall tactics and that CS can be extremely frustrating to deal with. Most of us have had similar experiences, whether it has to do with non-payment or something else. My last interaction with CS required 4 reps before someone actually understood the quite simple question I had asked. Was it frustrating, infuriating for them to waste both their time and mine with incompetency and sending me useless and irrelevant links to help pages? Of course it was. But I strived to remain polite and patient, because doing otherwise doesn’t help, and I doubt that your yelling and demanding had anything to do with the moving along of your case- most cases just take time to resolve and eventually do.

And are you aware that CS reps do not work directly for Airbnb? Airbnb, just like most huge companies, farms out their customer service to a third party provider. Those CS reps are overworked, poorly paid, and poorly trained and really don’t need people yelling at them all day about things over which they have no real control. You want to yell at someone, yell at Brian Chesky, he’s the boss. Or Catherine Powell, our supposed “Head of Hosting”, who received $9,601,996 in compensation in 2021- $600,000 in salary, $650,000 as a bonus, $4,656,420 in stock options, $3,683,302 as stock, and $12,274 in “other types of compensation”.

If I was owed $11,000 and it was past due by 2 weeks I’d be a little upset too. Air has him over a barrel and exactly what can he do about it besides yelling into a vacuum?

Airbnb has lost it. They really don’t give a rip for their hosts.

BTW That is the longest post I’ve seen on this site.
