Interesting Service Animal Inquiry

I just got the following inquiry. It will be interesting to see how/if it goes…

“Hi
Your farm sounds lovely. I am disabled with a service animal. He is 10lbs. Is your farm organic ?”

I get those also. I normally respond with, " Doesn’t matter service animal or not, we take dogs. Rules in house manual. No not organic. Must enter through garage if you cannot maneuver on one small step."

Nice! Thanx for your tip!

And an hour and a half later (I sent a total of thre responses. This is the response:

“Hi”

And then

“ I am unfamiliar with this webpage. I didn’t see I recieved messages.”

And then

“I can’t breath around most fragrances. He is a life saver.”

I think the last sentence was in response to the level Service Animal Question 2: what task are they trained to perform…oh being a lifesaver is now a trained task to a 10 pound animal. Yes, I know there are certain TASKS that can BE lifesaving…

And then

“ I live free of chemicals. They too affect me and finding a place is hard. My spouse and I came to empty storage units and head to Fl , well he got an infection, he is hospitalized and after they will have to send him to a therapeutic facility. That leaves me here in my truck till then.”

And then

“ Hope this helps understand my situation.”

And then

“Thank you Xxx” (edited to remove name).

Organic, well everything on the farm comes from the earth, in someway or another… 10 lbs, good you let me know since the dog fee is calculated by the pound.

Or if it was me…

I am sorry the farm is not organic, I am glad you mentioned the dog because I had a guest who snuck a puppy in two weeks ago and it crapped all over the place, then died of Parvo. I would not bring a dog here I think you may want to find something else.

I let her know initially that no the farm was absolutely not organic or I would advertise it that it was and that I don’t produce crops anyways.

I allow animals and charge by the house trained level, and have my own animals as well as sometimes boarder dogs so using the Parvo lie (even if I was willing to lie, which I’m not) is out.

Clearly you are a better human than me.

What do you wanna bet that the guest is lying to you about the service animal to avoid the fees? I would say it’s 50/50 she is lying, and that sucks for the people who need service animals. At least this guest, lying or not picked a listing that allows dogs instead of mine. For that I am grateful:)

Oh I’m leaning much closer to the 100 than 50 that it is a lie.

Oh my goodness, quite aside frm the dog issue, this woman has red flags pasted all over her. Multiple allergies, the dog alerts her to fragrances, her husband got an infection from a storage unit (?)
She should stay in her truck, she’s probably safest there.
“I’m so sorry, but we don’t use organic cleansers and many of them have fragrances. Best of luck finding an allergen-free listing, I know there are some out there.”

Exactly! I told her I use a lightly scented laundry detergent and usually place an Air Wick plug in in the guest bedroom. She would definitely need her own sheets. I’m trying to come up with a polite way to get her to say she can’t come rather than pulling my pre-approval. I hadn’t realized and usually preapproce everybody if they don’t use instant book already.

Ahhh your update sounds great. I may just go ahead and pull my pre-approval…I don’t need the stress this week.

I don’t pre-approve any Inquiries (I don’t use IB at all) until I have looked at their reviews (if there are any), their profile, and had enough communication with them to feel fine about the booking. Since there’s no need to do more than respond to an Inquiry, I don’t feel pressured to pre-approve at all.

I totally understand and have a different approach. I’ve only had one person in 3.5 years w Airbnb that I didn’t preapprove or allow to book. His last review indicated he smoked in the non smoking room and it was actually worse when I contacted tat host about him. When I told him no he got all pissy and said it was a lie and he wouldn’t smoke it there was a non smoking listing And I was being childish…he just provided post proof that I had made the right decision.

Real Service Dogs are not 10lb ankle biters. They are shepherds and labs and similar LARGE dogs trained to specific tasks, not “life savers”.

We are a NO PETS listing. I may get zinged for it someday, but the couple times I’ve been asked about bringing a support or service animal, I have replied to the effect that we accept “trained, certified Service Dogs”, and please send me a copy of the certification.

I agree with you 100%, but there is no certification to be had, if a guest offered up one I would assume it is fake.

In most cases but there CAN be service animals for alerting to seizures or anxiety or the like that don’t need to have size to do their job.

Did the people who to told you accept with a certification ever send it to you? If not, how did they respond?

PSin this case I highly doubt the dog is a true service dog.

Oh, and this was her last response after I turned her down…

“ Thank you so much. I may have found a place. I love farms. Maybe in the future. I unfortunately developed this and its hard finding places. Thank you for responding.”

So maybe in the future I won’t be using chemicals with a scent?

I would keep using scented detergent to avoid this type of guest.

Every time we have a thread about ESA vs service dog someone has to post incorrect information. It drives me nuts. I know no one cares but really…is it really necessary?

I was being sarcastic in my question. You are exactly right! So glad she had the issue of scent because if she had come lying about her service animal I would not have been happy.
