I’m used to be on the host side, so I know well the meaning of cancelling a reservation on my side.
This time I am a guest, and have booked a place after a short communication with the host and a confirmation on his side.
One day after, he had contacted me for having a double booking and of course went with apologizing etc and asked me to cancel as it will hurt him. As I am quite intimidated () for cancelling as a host, I thought it will be better not cancelling also as a guest, since I am not sure about the impact of general rating of my active user as a host.
The host will of course give me a full refund, and searching in google didn’t give me a proper answer regarding my question.
Does anyone know if I can cancel the booking safely?
As a host you will know hosts shouldn’t ask a guest to cancel.
Confirm to the host that he will need to cancel the booking. If he doesn’t, send the cancellation request which states that the HOST asked for the booking to be cancelled. If I was in your situation and the host refuses to cancel, I would just call Airbnb - they will see by your correspondence on Airbnb messaging that the host wants to cancel.
Cancelling will have no impact on your status as a host, but you could suffer financial penalties (see Airbnb Help Centre).
I’ve cancelled as a guest and it didn’t hurt my standing in any way but I had to pay the Airbnb fees.
In this case the host absolutely should cancel as it is his mistake. Only way I would cancel and help this host out of his bind is if I were compensated. Overall I’m not inclined to help out a host who doesn’t know how to properly run his business and the guest has to bear the inconvenience of finding another place, etc. It’s also possible he’s just trying to cancel you for a better booking.
NO. If you cancel to help the guy out of his double booking conundrum, the host could stiff you on the refund. Tell them you aren’t doing that and suggest he go to Air to cancel it. I had them cancel a double booking I made once (as a one time courtesy).
That they made a double booking is not your fault, and not your problem to solve. Tell them you aren’t canceling.
