I was robbed by my AirBnb guests, what now?

They ordered the things online before they arrived. I still have the packaging from most of it. They used my adresses to be delivered too, and different names which I am guessing are names of other people they stole from earlier. I’m not here to try to sell something or whatever, and I would please ask for you to keep any comments about that being the case to yourselves. If you want some proof, sent me your email and I will send you the pictures of the damages and emails from Airbnb customer service and the receipt from the police.

I was trying to figure out how this could have happened Sophie. A card stolen from a relative seems like the most likely scenario to me. The thing is with stolen cards, or stolen identities, they are only good for so long, and even then that length of time is difficult to predict.

she told me that it basically said they had no responsibility in anything happening when you rent out

What you are saying is that the $ 1,000,000 Airbnb host guarantee basically is a lie. I don’t think this is the case, but try looking at the case from any insurance company’s point of view. They certainly will not make a payment “just like that” since it would be an invitation to fraud by any old Airbnb host.

I think what you need to start with is a couple of good friends to calm you down (and perhaps professional psychological help if this gets worse) - and then a couple of weeks’ time for Airbnb’s insurance to sort out things.

Please keep us posted on how things develop.

I’m not really sure how we as other hosts can help you, other then to warn as and being a sounding board. You’ve done everything I would do - go to the police and try and file a claim with Air. I’m sorry thing has happened to you, especially in Denmark :frowning: one of the last countries I thought it would happen in if I’m honest.

I think you should write to your local paper to see if they will pick up the story - Airbnb will be all over you then.

Just a warning about some of the “complaints” we’re hearing about horror-show guests. This is in reference to the thread that was started by “torohost” yesterday regarding escort agencies. This fake screenshot took me all of two minutes to create.

I have a very nice property in the downtown area of a big city. I’ve been courted, fairly aggressively, by two other rental platforms. This is just a warning that some of what we’re hearing may not be real, although of course it’s good that we’re a generally sympathetic crowd. My guess is that this forum is a place where other companies can come to stir up trouble in the form of false stories and rumours.

This is just a heads up. Working in IT means I see all sorts of fakery.

I’m really not here to stirr up trouble. I’m not even from the us, and I have nothing to gain from this. I am a master student from Denmark, I’m 26 and I lost my most valuable belongings and my work equipment (photographer), so obviously I’m desperate for some reassurance to see if Airbnb has been helpful towards others in this situation. I have documentation from the police that I reported it as a crime and I have countless emails from Airbnb and the police that confirms this further. I’m not saying the host guarantee is fake - I am simply asking if anyone knows what it actually covers, and if other people have had experiences with getting reimbursement from theft and vandalism by guests.

sophie. Dreadful what happened. But you are wrong about no insurance in Denmark. I googled short-let insurance denmark and found three companies that are prepared to insure short-term lets for both contents and liability. It took a while to find this insurance in the UK, but the cost, ~£550 a year, is worth it. You never know with any short-let business who your next guest will be.

I can’t find any that covers intentional damage and theft by guest I provided with a key.

apparently airbnb paid off these people. maybe because they got such extensive coverage. http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2015/apr/30/airbnb-calgary-home-trashed-drug-induced-orgy i’d just stick with the program and then turn it over to your uncle if they don’t do anything.

Oh ken, interesting where did you get your insurance from in the end?

If you say you contacted Airbnb after the incident happened, just wondering if you contacted their Danish office (if there is one) or the US head office? It took me about a year after I started hosting guests to find out that Airbnb actually run a local German office; before that, I used to make phone calls to their California office instead of calling the one in Berlin.

I suppose that, even if there is a local office in Denmark, host guarantee issues will be covered by the head office, which might explain the delay you are experiencing.

There are offices in most countries, when you go the urgent button it will bring it up. If there isn’t a office in your country then i guess it will bring up the USA number.

Intasure. Public liability, damage etc etc. And specifically designed for holiday home lets, so they know that you have given the key to people.

Any news on this matter?

Yes, actually Airbnb just payed me for all of the stolen things and I am very happy with the results. So the host guarantee does cover theft by guests!

Nice to hear, sophie - thanks!

Yay, great news! Glad to hear you got re-imbursed for your losses. thanks for updating.

Thanks Sophie for giving us a follow-up on the story. I guess that’s what the host guarantee is for. Just takes some patience, I suppose.

That just happened to me, I believe the once who stayed in your apartment are same once of mine, because they did the same exact thing with my apartment, they made it trash and a mess! They did a weird actions. They open all the packaged I have storage with my personal items. They now knew who I am, where I study, who I look like, my full name, where am I from and what I drive exactly! They got the keys of the apartment I mean they took them. They stole my tv with another electronic items and some of things I am not sure yet, car title I guess. I report that to the police, but I dont know the process. The only thing that I am afraid to that they are a group of criminals that they gonna follow me everywhere to catch me to have my money, to steel my car to kidnap me. I don’t know that they made that just to let me feel unsafe or another big thing that I don’t even know about, bigger than my imagination. I asked the maintenance to change the keys then I am gonna move to another apartment, but that doesn’t mean that everything is safe now, because if they are keeping their eyes on me they will know that I moved and they already knew where is my university is, my car and my face! what do you suggest? because that happened with you before! I am totally scared! One more thing, do you own your apartment of you rent it?
Your help will be appreciated
