Hosts need to start leaving honest reviews!

Well I got the post up before expiration time so for their revenge, since it was too late to write a review, they sent me a request for $700!
Saying their friends had to move to a hotel because there was water on the floor on ONE (of the 2) bathrooms-for 90 minutes.
Its hilarious.
Luckily all our conversation is on airbnb so I am soooo in the clear.
I knew they were trouble so I covered myself with every email.

I’m glad your sense of humour remains intact. Well done!

I’m answering five questions in my review for other hosts to consider:

Was communication sufficient?
Were house rules followed?
How did the leave the place?
Would I host them again?
Would I recommend them to others?

Nit-picky shit I leave for the private feedback. I’m trying to cultivate good guests for the community, not blackball someone from the platform because they have different sensibilities… heck, some folks just don’t know any better

I’ve been hosting for 10+ years but am new to Airbnb and this forum. Here is my question. Is there a way to see a potential guest’s reviews before confirming them? I have no desire to host nitpickers or rude people. Thanks, yall!
Trish

I’d also like to say that in my 10+ years, I’ve only one completely impossible guest (he said 12 bath towels weren’t enough for a 1-night stay. Seriously). But my last Airbnb guests were the biggest slobs on the planet, Dutch father & son. There were sheets, blankets, towels, empty wrappers, etc all over the floor. No attempt at all was made to tidy up at all. Do yall leave a negative review for something like that? I don’t expect them to make the bed or anything, but the way they left things was pretty ridiculous. I will also have to say I’ve never had that problem with guests I booked myself. I wish I could’ve seen their review first. I’d still have accepted them, but it would’ve avoided the shock when I went in the guest house the next day. Thanks!

Hi Trish,

I see what you mean but it’s also a good idea to ask your guests about it at the beginning of their stay. Here’s an example:

ā€œGeorge, I see that when you stayed in California last year your host said in your review that you left lots of garbage in the apartment. I’m sure this was some sort of mistake but I’m just wondering if there’s anything you need to know about the garbage system here? The large wheeled trash cans are over there by those bushes and there are plenty of trash bags under the sink in the apartment. Let me know if you need moreā€¦ā€

I rattle on a lot more about how here in a hot climate garbage left around means flies, ants and other undesirable creepy-crawlies and to let me know if they need me to help. Blah blah, the old lady natters on and on and on. But it works every time

How can I see a guest’s previous reviews of a listing, and prior hosts previous reviews of them? I haven’t found any of that. I must be looking in the wrong place.

That’s interesting. We get lots of people here fed up with Airbnb and swearing off of it. It’s rare to get someone going the opposite direction.

Surely you mean the reviews they have left for other hosts? Since obviously you see their reviews as guests on their profile. If yes to the former, then there’s an extension on the Chrome Browser called Air Review.

As an aside you probably aren’t going to find Airbnb to be a great platform if you are picky about who you host. They are moving more and more to the hotel model where you have to take everyone without knowing much about them. They give preferential search ranking to hosts with instant book. If you have too many declines or cancel people’s reservations after accepting them (if you aren’t on instant book) they drop you in search rank

The other way is to click on the guest’s profile, then click on their reviews and then click on the host’s profile then scroll down and find their review of that host. Very cumbersome to say the least.

There was no info of any kind, just a first name. No hyperlinks anywhere to click for more info. I’d like to know if someone was unhappy about something at another host’s so I can adjust accordingly,
I ended up here because a dear friend has 3 properties listed and highly recommended it.

Is the browser extension not working for you?

There is also a version of Air Review for Firefox. I love it.

Air Review does let you see the reviews that guests leave for hosts. Once you have it installed you can just click on their picture or the link labled ā€œprofileā€ and you will not only see the ways hosts reviewed them but also the reviews they left for hosts.

Sometimes Air Review takes a little while to find and download their reviews of hosts.

It’s great! Dodged another bullet this week from a chap who had 5 star reviews. But when I checked to see how,he reviewed these hosts, he was a three star jerk, if he reviewed at all.
