Hi people,
We were not happy with one of the mattresses in the room and wanted a firmer one, so we went and bought a new full size mattress.
Problem is when we got the thing home and actually put it on the bed, we realised the thing is just so very hard/ firm and returning it is not an option.
Is there anything one can do/ put on it, so it doesn’t feel as hard as it currently is?
I add either a down-like mattress topper or a memory foam mattress topper to improve hard mattresses… I’ve not ever had a complaint about bed comfort!
I’m with Cindy on adding a memory foam mattress topper on top of the firm mattress, which I personally prefer, but others have said that it was harder than they were used to.
Thanks people.
I have been looking for a mattress topper but the places that used to stock them are out, and mail order is not an option (I’m not in the Americas or Europe).
In case I don’t find a topper, would simply putting a duvet or comforter on top of the mattress but under the sheet work? Any thoughts?
I would think Overstock.com ships internationally… or walmart.com or target.com… all of those places carry mattress toppers. Overstock often has free shipping. Good luck!
I bought a topper for my Queen bed, and get rave reviews… but it is not only apparently smaller than the queen by a few inches, but it also slides around on top. Any recommended toppers that you know fit well on a Queen?
Try a protective mattress cover to help reduce slippage.
Aquatic guests I would find a place in your country that sells basic foam. There should be somewhere where you live. They will provide foam for couches, and different applications. The best thing for your situation is usually cheap egg crate foam as a topper 1-2 inches max. It will definitely make things better. Memory foam is subjective and more expensive and oftentimes too hot to sleep on for many people that sleep hot. Egg crate foam is what is used in a pillow top mattress to give a more plush feel. People will like it. I would buy a mattress protector for over the top. All the best!
I recently returned from Korea, where hard mattresses are the norm. Fortunately I love them, but most people would probably say sleeping on the floor would be more comfortable!
By the way… everyone should get a plastic mattress cover and enclose the whole thing. Not expensive and necessary to protect it from those non-paying guests who check in but don’t check out…Bed bugs you know.
I was told by another Airbnb Forum member that a topper was essential I bought one that was too noisy (can’t fathom what was inside) and returned it.I bought another one that my guests simply did not like and they removed it. It is now on my guest bed in my own house where I will try it out on my personal guests. BTW, I have enclosed my mattress with an envelope to prevent bedbugs. I wash my mattress cover, a pretty thick one but not a topper, between all tenants and I vacuum my bed between tenants.
Thanks people,
I eventually found some kind of quilted mattress topper which I’ve placed on the mattress, although from my test, I didn’t think it makes much of a difference - it’s not very thick and has no foam.
Will try and look around for the foam as suggested by anon!
On the other issue, I keep hearing on the forum here about bed bugs and protecting the mattress.
So we should cover the mattress/ enclose them fully?
With what?
Bed Bath and Beyond sells a bed bug preventer for a queen sized bed that is a zip up envelope. It sells for about $59.
I am happy with the one I bought and it is easy to install.
But I am having a problem find a proper “topper.” I have been through two, both of which were not acceptable.
One, too noisy; the other, too small for a queen bed. Suggestions? Also, I think that any mattress cover ought to be cleaned or washed between all guests. I think dry cleaning a topper would be $50 or so in my neighborhood. Washing is not thinkable because of its size. Any comments?
I think that’s way over the top. That’s what sheets are for! You change the sheets and pillowcases/duvet covers between each guest, and wash the mattress protector weekly or monthly, depending on your booking schedule and guests. We mainly book just over the weekends in a few different rooms, so monthly is fine for us. Our mattress pads are huge thick and fluffy, and the drying after towels, and bedding is way too much and unnecessary. Duvets themselves, depending on the type you have can be washed every couple of months to a couple of times a year for down (if no spills or dirt and well protected).
My apartments in D.C. are booked every day. “Between tenants” I do a deep clean within a couple of hours including installation of a fresh mattress cover and duvet cover. I am a super host and loving every minute of it. A place tht sparkles with cleanliness goes a long way.
Totally agree. How long do your guests stay blueskies? Our guests stay 2-3 days typically as we are a weekender type of destination (not a city), but we have 5 rooms. So you see that washing them every two to three days would be massive overkill and would ruin them in short order. It really depends on your bedding and bedding quality. Big thick pads with a lot of filling will really suffer with constant washing. Sheets just sleep on for a couple of nights should keep things clean, but if it’s over a week at a time, I imagine things get dirty quickly.
My guests range in length of stay. Recently a German couple stayed for seven months.
Few stay only one weekend. One to two weeks is normal. Occasional six week stays. The apartments are in my house/gallery and are separate.
Long stays. That’s great!
I agree with cindiksherman to use a topper, and I don’t think that just putting something on top will solve it. I had the same problem when I purchased my mattress - I was convinced that the firmer is better, and I believed it was good for me so I purchased it. After a while it felt terrible, but I couldn’t send it back, so I purchased an extra plush bamboo fitted topper, but you should make your research (and best if you try it yourself before buying). At the time when I did my research I found a lot of info here http://whymattress.com/best-mattress-topper-reviews/ you have specific details about toppers, what kind of toppers there are, what is recommended to whom. Good luck!
By way of update I’ve had nothing but great comments from guests about that bed that had the mattress on that I thought was too hard.
I guess the combination of the hard mattress and the quilted topper has worked well for guests.
At least two have said they wished they could carry the bed with them, and one guest actually wanted to buy the mattress off me!
Go figure!
