Help me understand US duvet/comforter sizes

I’m in the process of buying some new duvet covers, and have realized that I don’t fully understand the sizing.

Is there such a thing as a queen sized duvet/comforter?

It seems the covers come in the following sizes:
Twin
XL twin
Full/Queen*
King
California King

*Why is it that there is only one size of duvet/comforter called Full/Queen which is meant to work with both full (AKA double) and queen beds?

Sheets come in separate sizes…

For the Love of God, please don’t let this descend into a debate on duvet VS comforter VS top sheet.

If you are in the U.S. is there not standard sizing for the various bed types you mention?

There is over here for double, king etc

There are, but I don’t understand why you can only buy a duvet (and cover) in a size called Full/Queen.

Full and Queen are different sized mattresses:

Full: 54”x75”
Queen:60”x80”

Okay. You spoil all my fun - I was just revving up for the debate.

They are basically Queen. The full/queen will be bigger on a full bed. I know this because I switched from full to queen bed in my airbnb and can still use the same duvet cover. On the full it was more like a bedspread. If this is for your bed against the wall you will find that the Queen is still generously sized instead of just barely covering the mattress. LOL.

If you really want the correct size you will have to make your own duvet covers out of 2 flat sheets that are of a of a specific size. Different duvet companies produce different sizes. You should measure your duvet.
Then look at the size of the cover available to buy. It may fit a little loose, or it may be a more stuffed and puffy look depending on the actual duvet size you are putting in side of your duvet cover.
I think the cover looks slightly better when there is plenty of room for the duvet, and you can fold over the top edge a little so ‘duvet dummie’ guests will know where to climb in.
I agree it is confusing. Since my beds are doubles and my duvets are full-queens, I have a little more flexibilty. Also my beds are against a wall.

What @KKC said: fitted sheets have to have the same dimensions as the mattress. With a comforter/duvet/duvet cover there is some wiggling room. On a full-size bed, the full/queen size comforter/duvet/duvet cover will just hang a bit lower than on a queen-size mattress.

I guess the six-inch differece in mattress width and five-inch difference in length is sufficiently insignificant to allow one to use the same size of cover, while being too large to allow for a one-size-fits-all fitted sheet.

Hope this helps decrease confusion on this topic.

It’s depend on the situation. be a comforter is large, and many washers can’t adequately manage such a load. Having a cover or fitted sheet helps you to have clean bedding at all times without taxing your home appliances or paying a laundry to use a larger washing.

In my continuing efforts to be supportive of our duvet-favoring hosts:

King bedspreads to generously toss over the queen bed for me – now and forever! Yes, I stuff 'em in the washer after every guest.

Unbelievable!

I just wrote in another topic how three flights of stairs aren’t a problem for European people. And earlier I was having a rant (offline) about how remotes for TVs create lazy people. And now I see that there are people in the US who will pay nearly $30 for a ‘device’ to help with a job that takes a lot less time than the explanatory video.

And in the blub it says:

Do you hate changing your duvet cover?
Do you wish there was a duvet changing hack to make this agony go away?

Agony???

I’m hating that I’m sounding like my old granny now but what is the world coming to?

About duvets & pillows

  1. In HBO’s White Lotus filmed at a coastal resort in Hawaii, there’s a surprising amount of dragging thick white duvets around. In that a thing? Does it get that cold at night? I could only tolerate something that thick if I can see my breath.

  2. This summer, I’ve had some amazing good guests. I can tell I’ve had quite a few clean-freak folks. Here’s the thing, pillows have disappeared. Not the usual trade old for new, just gone. Is this a new cost of doing business, like expect stained towels, expect pillows to leave?
