I’ve gone as far as placing a caption next to the inside lock on the front door “Please lock door”. This mini note drastically reduced the number of times I found the door unlocked, as it was placed precisely where and when they needed to read it without being too obtrusive.

I have an apartment so the entrance is inside the apartment building. I have a key pad deadbolt on the front door that automatically closes after 45 seconds. That works pretty well. The only issue I have experienced is the door being held open as guests take time to take all their bags out, the deadbolt latch extends and then the guest leave. Since the door is on a heavy return spring the door will not close as the extended bolt now hits the door jamb! This has happened about 3 times in 3 years so it’s not a huge problem,
