I am the creator of this post. I asked if people were noticing slowdowns because I didn’t get my normal Canadian guests and no overseas guests. Yes, it’s political because this administrations’ policy that are making people fearful of traveling to the US. I’m down 50 percent so far this year.
But I would also like to add:
Biden had a very poor showing but still had a great team running the country but he realized he could not longer run as the party leader. Harris ran for president so base your judgement on the person who actually ran.
Voting ie: Save Act - did you get married? Does your birth certificate not match your driver’s license. Oh well you can’t vote. Yes, if you had a passport or real id you could but how many people in poorer states have access to these things.
Finally, no matter what president we get, Dem or Rep I always felt that in 4 years we can try again plus there are the mid-term elections. None of those things may be possible because Trump is turning our country into an autocracy .
Can you believe how f**king stupid people who wear sloganned red caps are - that they think that a difference between your birth certificate and your passport last name should make you ineligible to vote? That they actually went and tried to pass a law based on this idiocy? I guess they’ve never heard of married partners changing their name? The problem that I see is the gross idiocy that people are willing to accept because of their hatred for race, color, or beliefs.
The point of the law is to disenfrancise women voters. I believe it will hurt republican votes more. The blue states are made of more of educated women who have traveled more out of the country or have real IDs and pay attention more to what is going on in this country. They also have a better standard of living and may not be living paycheck to paycheck so that they have more leisure time to stay. up on the news. (Just my personal opinion).
The point of the law is to put women in their place in the home. There’s been talk about awarding women bonuses who have more children. Seriously, most people can’t afford to have one or two. and what little support from the government has been cut (headstart, Medicaid, Snap, etc). Perhaps the bonus only counts if you are married?
Anyway, for those who have rose-colored glasses with our current president, by the time they see clearly it will be too late. We have to Rise UP now. Today is May Day. There are protests all over the country. (Some really small and only for a couple of hours.) Google it, find one and let your signage be heard.
No slow down for us, and no difference regarding Canadian or foreign guests. We live south of Atlanta, which is a major transportation hub and just 5 miles off of I75 - a major North/South interstate.
For the first 5 years of hosting we would get about 2 terrible guests a year. But the last 7 in a row have been absolutely terrible (poor communication, breaking furniture, false accusations, and unbelievably rude). Our rates have stayed relatively the same since after Covid. These last 7 guests have come from both higher and lower rates.
As someone who lives in Canada – which used to be the number one source of foreign tourist dollars in the United States – i can confirm that MAGA politics has everything to do with the steep decline in Canadian tourists to the United States.
Yes – Canadians are offended at Trumps casually belligerent disrespect for Canadian sovereignty and at his lies about the imaginary dangers of imaginary fentanyl pouring south from Canada and his broken CANADA-US trade treaty…
it is also very much that tens of millions of Canadians do not want to visit a country where – statistically speaking – every second person they come into contact with voted for Trump. Canadians just don’t want to be around that kind of energy.
Speak for yourself and not all Canadians. I had a very impt person die due to the fentanyl pouring across the border- read up on your facts and stop spouting opinions
you haven’t done your research on. Opioids . Canada is experiencing a drug toxicity crisis that is being fuelled by synthetic opioids like fentanyl. Between January 2016 and September 2022, there were more than 34,400 apparent opioid toxicity deaths, many of which also involved stimulants or other substances.
I’m sorry for your loss. As someone who has kept a Narcan kit in his home for the past ten years hoping he will never actually need it for his granddaughter, I am well aware of what’s happening inside Canada.
You completely misunderstood my reference to fentanyl. I was referring to Donald Trump’s fictional excuse for tariffs on Canadian imports into the U.S.A. His claim was that tariffs were necessary to punish Canada for the “massive amounts of fentanyl” that “lax Canadian enforcement” allows to pour across the Canadian border into the United States.
This fairy tail was designed for the suckers and rubes watch who FOX News in the United States, but the stats are that fentanyl arrives in the United States on cargo ships from Asia and in hidden compartments on vehicles from Mexico. The north-to-south fentanyl stream is less than one per cent. It is not the “national-security emergency” he invoked to justify the tariffs.
Once again, I am sorry for your loss, but I stand by my original, well-researched and fact-based comments. If you misunderstood me to be claiming there wasn’t a drug problem within Canada, I can only suggest you re-read my original comment more carefully.
And guess what? Trump is so concerned about overdose deaths, his administration is proposing cuts to programs, including funding for nalaxone, that will result in far more opiod deaths.
Yes, maybe you should. This forum doesn’t censor what users want to talk about. If you prefer a heavily moderated forum (the mods here are volunteers and also hosts) where only non-controversial topics are allowed to be discussed, there’s always the Airbnb community forum.
And if you aren’t interested in a topic or are offended by the comments, you are free to skip over them.
In a discussion about US tourism tanking as a direct result of the current US administration, yes, politics is everything.
And when the POTUS wants to impose outrageous tariffs on every other country in the world, and talks about invading other countries and taking them by force, America is indeed everywhere.
Yes! Last year (our first year) we were booked every weekend and more, but now it’s running one a month. Others in our town are saying the same thing. When I went in to pay my T.O.T., the clerk said it’s affecting the city’s coffers, since tourism is so important here.
Many come here to visit Yosemite National Park, but with all the political upheaval, so many park employees being laid off, I think guests might be afraid to book a trip right now.
No guests from other countries, either.
In January and February we had our first cancellations. I wondered then if it was due to anti-Airbnb feelings because Gebbia was a DOGE tech bro.
Whatever is causing this slowdown, hope it is resolved soon.
Somehow you have missed the whole point of this thread: it is examining whether or not the well-documented, politically-based downturn in foreign visitors to the USA is trickling down to our mom-and-pop Airbnbs.
I live in Canada – for decades America’s #1 source of tourist dollars. I can assure you that there has been a documented substantial decline in Canadian travel to the USA since January. (Don’t believe me: pick up the phone and have a five minute chat with the chamber of commerce in Bar Harbour, Maine or Palm Springs CA or Blaine , Washington.) The decline is directly attributable to a grassroots boycott of spending on American goods and services.
So you jump into the middle of a discussion about the negative effect of Mr. Trump’s belligerence on American tourism (including Airbnbs), and then complain about people being negative.
I see you just recently joined the forum, so please allow me to offer some respectful advice: Read. The. Room.
And also to law-abiding people fearing being hassled and detained at the border, having their phones searched, being treated like criminals. This is not some baseless paranoia- it has been happening and reported a lot.
It’s one thing if someone really has to go to the US, for personal or business reasons, but otherwise, why would anyone voluntarily put themselves in that situation? There are plenty of other places to go on vacation.
And with the effects of Trump’s tariffs, which result in higher domestic prices, cross-border shopping, which Canadians have done to buy things cheaper, won’t even be a thing anymore.
Yes, and here is one to let you know that you are treading on thin ice.
As @Spark says, ‘READ THE ROOM’. I realise that you might not be internet-wise enough to have been around forums for long (and I’m assuming that you read the FAQ before posting) but I’m sure that you nevertheless know better than to act in the way you are doing.
But leaving that aside, I’m wondering where you’re from? One of your IP addresses is Singapore and another is the Netherlands. Both are operating VPNs. Knowing your true location would be a great help.
And, as this is one of your very few posts to date, let us know more about you. Where do you host? How long have you been hosting?
Remember that visiting a forum can be likened to visiting someone’s online home. You’re in someone else’s home here so kindly behave pleasantly to we fellow guests.
What an awesome reply. When I posted my query, I had no idea that it would take off like it has but honestly, I felt that the downturn in my bookings was due to the fact that foreigners are fearing coming to the USA. I think that just like people who reverently support the USA’s current president, they are unable to see the facts through the forest of lies.
Now we get to wait until the tariffs (ie: taxes) start effecting the economy too. I’m already trying to figure out ways to cut corners this year. No updated bedding and linens this year. Cutting back on the free snacks, perhaps even not providing my coffee and teas when they run out. I’m only charging about $79 per night (That’s my winter rate) for a 3 room suite only 7 miles north of Boston on the public transportation system and free off street parking and I still have no bookings beyond the first week of June. I’ve done this for 9 years and understand the the Airbnb Marketplace well. I’m both a super host and guest favorite.
