Expectations of a guest

I tried to post 8 pictures in one post but it said new users can’t upload more than one picture.

I assure you its real. What part of this seems fishy? Again, I’m not asking for resolutions, as I’m already doing what’s necessary to make the stay work ala: I bought my own cleaning supplies and cleaned it myself. I’m just trying to figure out if airbnb will work out for me in the future. I’m hoping my situation was abnormal and not what is usually expected.

Per this link, the cost of electricity varies. Also, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with hosts marking up amenities as long as the price is transparent. The drinks in hotel mini bars are vastly marked up.

It’s in the Texas area. The pictures show hair on the door and a nasty toilet that likely hasn’t been cleaned in a long time.

If you posted a link to the AirBNB listing, we might be of more assistance.

Bottom line is that no, you should not have been subjected to dirty conditions, and should have reported that immediately to AirBnb via the Air message system.

Bottom line is that yes, you should have access to all amenities described in the listing, but not necessarily at any moment you choose; and if you did not get then you at all, you should have reported that immediately to AirBnb via the Air message system.

Bottom line is that no, you should not expect a clean towel every day, or blackout curtains to be supplied for your use. In America the norm at an AirBnb rental is that you use the same towels for the duration of your stay, or clean towels once a week. Even in most hotels you do not get fresh towels every day!

Bottom line on AC is that it depends on where you are staying. If you are sharing an apartment with the host, there is one thermostat for the whole place, and you should not touch it without permission. If you are in a detached structure like my rental, the ac/heater is under your control.

IMHO only a cheapskate money grubbing host would charge you to charge your Prius,

Those are some pretty disgusting photos. They were taken right after check-in? You booked it for 45 days? How much did this place charge? Can you post a link to the listing? Did you ask the host about the filthy bathroom?

Spider webs aren’t dirt, that’s nature. I live in the country and within a day of cleaning spider webs away, they are back. Your special requests aren’t cheap, blackout curtains can cost $100 or more. 45 days of you using the laundry facilities with your attitude towards using a towel that was only used to dry your clean body, makes me think you would likely do a load every day. Then there is the outrageous request that the host fuel your car! You were lucky to find a host to agree to rent to you. Oh, and how do you spend $40 on cleaning supplies?

I don’t know. Certainly the room should not be dirty. That is a deal breaker.

No… An Airbnb is not a hotel. You don’t get fresh towels every day, as in will a maid come in and perform housekeeping services? NO. I would judge by this statement that your expectations are way out of line with what is typically provided. Not sure about blackout drapes. They are really expensive. Most of us are not going to install them for the one or two guests out of hundreds who need them.

I had a guest once who asked if my place was soundproof and had blackout drapes. This was a red flag to me and I declined them. I don’t need someone coming here and being so bothered by light and sound. It’s a family neighborhood and there’s noise after 8am. They need to shop elsewhere.

However, if you had a discussion with the hosts before booking and they told you you could charge the car and use the laundry and when you get there and find that not to be the case, I would think you have a valid complaint.

May I ask why you just didn’t book a hotel as you are Obviously a business traveler?

I have an apartment that I let out via AirBNB.

The list of amenities are amenities that are available to use. There may be specific restrictions but those should be set out in the listing.

For example, we list having a washer and dryer, but not in our listing that these are communal to the building with a fee. We also offer an air dryer for free use - and note this. We do not provide laundry soap. We do provide “essentials” and those are new, unused and sufficient for a guests’ stay.

We do not offer fresh daily towels. I appreciate your POV re towels, but that is not normal. If a guest is staying for over a week, we provide them with a second set of towels and linen. We haven’t had a guest stay for longer than 2 weeks, and 30 days is our default maximum.

Your experience in the first/current AirBNB is sub-standard. The second one also seems sub-standard and I do agree with Louise that spider webs are not necessarily a hygiene issue.

If you contacted me, and I agreed to blackout curtains/charging then that’s what would have been provided at no extra charge. While blackout curtains are expensive, if you were staying for 45 days (or several weeks), I would consider providing it if I didn’t have it already. I may be the odd man out in agree to this though.

We bought these blackout curtains for our guest room. They were inexpensive and the room is like a cave when they are closed. Guests love them.

Most seem to have missed an important point.

You cancelled the original host. You booked another and also cancelled that one because it was worse. You then went back to the original guy and paid him directly via PayPal.

You’re on your own. Sorry but these discussions about what you should be getting are pointless. You no longer have a valid booking with Airbnb.

That said the cleanliness for me is below standard. Using a fresh towel daily isn’t standard. Black out curtains are not standard you ought to take an eyemask if you’re light sensitive.

Can I ask for the link to the listing? It’s better to judge.
And what are you paying?

I understand why members are asking for the listing to help clarify the situation.
I want more information too and would really like to see the listing as it would help immensely in clearing up some facts. It is not out of order to ask for the listing at all.

However, if I was the OP I would be hesitant to share the listing link.
He has already been accused of being “fishy” and criticized for his OCD on the towels. Anyone could contact that host and bust the guest for seeking help here on this forum.

@Jasonj24680 wanted a fair judgement of the situation. For that I think it’s imperative to have more information.

Apologize if I missed anything in the posts. But what was the correspondence between you and the host? You weren’t happy with the place, cancelled, left to a new place, and then wanted to come back. What reasons did you give the host for cancelling? And what was his reaction?

I am not understanding why a private bathroom was left filthy for a new guest. Was there a reason why it wasn’t cleaned? Did you say “hey…I think someone forgot to clean the bathroom”? It sounds like you bought the cleaning supplies after you returned. But was the bathroom filthy the first time around? If so, what happened after you addressed this with the host?

Regarding your towel usage…I am curious what you do when you visit family/friends, etc.? Do you pack up a bunch of towels to take with you, or are all these people okay with your towel habit? Just saying that if a friend stayed with me for a week, I’d have to say something if they were reaching for a new towel every day. I’d have to ask if something got spilled on their towel.

It may or it may not - that’s up to you. It seems that your original complaints were about the lack of daily towels and the fact that you should have access to the thermostat.

As you’ve gathered from the above messages, using a towel every day is not normal in an Airbnb or in many other types of accommodation. (Including hotels these days - many issue fresh towels only on request as an environmental measure).

If you’re staying in someone’s home - Airbnb or not - then it’s not very polite to mess with their thermostat without permission. When in someone’s home - whether you’re paying a fee or not - then you behave as any civilised house guest would do.

Airbnb accommodation varies widely and I imagine that your reluctance to post a link to the listing is because it’s cheap. I believe you said that you chose Airbnb as a cheaper option.

99.9% of Airbnb guests have a wonderful time but you have to adjust your expectations from those you expect from a hotel. You wouldn’t demand that a hotel had special drapes fitted for you - you wouldn’t expect them to allow you to use their laundry facilities and many hotels charge a fee for parking your car so I imagine some would also charge a small fee for charging it.

You’d also want to look at Airbnb’s TOS before you stay and learn the correct procedures to follow should you have any issues.
