Does this bathroom have a window? If not, I’d think an extractor fan would be a must in Florida.

BTW, I wonder if he’s taking some sort of medication that is both increasing his libido and making him more short tempered…

Could be… He drinks like a fish. Before i saw how much he drinks i was on my husband’s case for what i thought was a bit excessive drinking like 1-2 drinks a day. But this guy goes through beer like water, and there is always bottles of booz in his room.

WHen we bought the house there was no fan in this bathroom. We never thought even of putting it in until this mold issue

Crikey! This guy is a piece of work!!!

What does the squegee do? And would a fan have any effect? Maybe an extractor fan?

ADDENDUM: Never mind, I see that’s been mentioned.

I think we may have mold problems here too. It gets really damp here during the monsoons with all the incessant rain. And our back rooms have been smelling rather bad recently. But not in the bathrooms.

Faheem, I just checked out your place – awesome! Looks like a place a writer like Hemingway would stay. But I will mention that you only have four pillows on the bed

Hi @sandy2,

Thanks! Though I don’t see the Hemingway connection.

Actually, there are six. But maybe I added two after the photos were taken. Those photos are quite old now - I think they were taken in February. Though the room has not changed significantly since then.

BTW, I see you are located in Boulder. I drove through there once. It was stunning scenery. Beautiful.

We’re in S. Florida and used to have a small mold problem in our tiny bathroom. (Our apartment, not the rental). Keeping a window open permanently solved it.

I recall in another thread (I think it was the one on how we hate that what you could improve box) that a guest mentioned that you needed an extractor fan. I remember because I was surprised it didn’t have one in FL. Is that going to be part of your renovations?

We had the same problem with a guest (we’re in england) - we don’t have windows in our bathroom and although the extractor fan is good its not the best. He had that many showers a day and would close the door afterward. Needless to say a week with this guest was enough. I used a whole bottle of beech getting mold off. I find european guests tend to shut the bathroom door everytime - even though we made a point of leaving it open.

Thats true, one guy said we need it along with the long list of other things he did not like. I found that comment to be strange because its like commenting we need to install another freezer.
No it’s not of the project. I understood that fan can’t make significant difference if there so many showers take place and water is not dried

Yes, this is part of the etiquette. Always close doors.
Very hard to unlearn.

We installed vents in our bathroom doors, because an extractor fan is useless when fresh air cannot get into the room.

Also the fans are connected to the lights and run on a delayed timer. If fans are operated manually, guest will often not use them, or turn them off too soon.

That’s a great idea to put vents in the bathroom door. I just have one question; do the vents let the bathroom odors out in to the rest of the house? I have been considering attaching the fan to the light as most guests forget to turn on the fan when they shower. My concern is that everyone else in the house would be annoyed by the fan noise whenever someone was in the bathroom.

Bathroom odors? What do you mean? A bathroom should not have odors, then you have a serious problem.

Yes, there will always be some noise from a fan. But some give less noise than others, look for a good quality fan.
Also, if there is noise, people spend less time in the bathroom.

You could install something like this:

I mounted a kind of relay, that switches on with a delay, so when someone enters the bathroom for a short visit, like getting a towel or something, the fan is not turned on.

You can also buy fans that have all this integrated:

2 minute delayed start an adjustable delayed stop.

I live in Florida and am allergic to mold. Mold loves dampness and darkness. I have an extractor fan that blows the air out into the attic. I keep a nightlight in there, and the door is always open when the room is not in use. When I had a larger bathroom, I had a small tabletop fan in there and left it on all the time.

Many Americans also routinely keep the bathroom door closed all the time. I have had to put a note on the inside of the door reminding them to leave it open between uses. The room is small and if the door is closed the mold just goes nuts in the dark and damp.

I am glad I brought up this subject. I never dealt with mold before and I had no idea that’s the measures that needed to be taken to prevent it. Thanks
