I have a guest with an upcoming reservation in a day and a half. They are requesting, as you can imagine, a change for the reservation for two months from now. If I just let the Clock run out on this until their reservation starts, will I be penalized?
I am not sure, but I doubt you have to respond. I think I would just say
Unfortunately I am unable to change the dates at this late time.
That’s it, just say no.
Good luck

I made a change request to a host this fall and after about 36 hours he hadn’t answered so I cancelled my booking. Within minutes he was messaging me saying he’d gotten no notice of the change request. So apparently you can be an ass or play dumb. I couldn’t find anything indicating there was a time limit or any penalty for the host while I waited on his reply.
If you are not aware, this is a known way to get around your cancellation policy. Search the forum and you’ll find lots info.
Basically, once. you accept the change, Air treats is like it’s a new reservation and so they can cancel and get all their money back.
I never accept a change. If they want to modify and add dates, then I have them make an inquiry and respond with an offer for the additional days as a separate reservation and remove the cleaning fee.
Excellent description and advice!
That is what is happening to me; someone tells me they need to cancel (in text not airbnb message of course) and at first ‘innocently’ asked to extend the booking for ‘next week’ by one day as a ‘gift’ for me lol. Then, I got a request to change the booking for this week to some time in March. If I hadn’t been a long time member of this forum I would never have known of this well worn trick.
Airbnb SHOULD make any of these changes requested from guests stick to the original 48 hour policy and prevent this ‘loophole’…
