Contributions from guests

And that’s the issue with Airbnb “improvements,” isn’t it? The terms are a mystery. Is it a deliberate process of putting out the beta version and just having the user community flag bugs? Or disorganized SOP in general? Maybe exacerbated by being in survival panic mode, so they’re hurriedly throwing stuff against the the wall to see what sticks? Who knows.

I’ve had notification of a new notification for over a week, but when I click on it, nothing new appears, only stuff going back to January and behind.

I see everything you show JJD. Not “I don’t see…”

What I meant – using the pronoun “you” – was: only HOSTS see the bit about “if you don’t want the tip”. Guests don’t see that part.

Ahhhh. I see now. I completely misinterpreted.

Thank you for letting us know! Geeze. Looks like mine is broken (surprise surprise) when I turn it off, then click to another section and come back, it’s turned back on! WTH

I’d best go and check again…

Okay seen it now.

Did you read what it says? @muddy

It is not about soliciting past guests for donations but asking future guests if they want to add a tip!

Yes, I read what it says. It will be sent to past guests who left a 5* review. So it isn’t something that will influence a guest’s review. I will try to find the wording of that and post it. It’s elsewhere than what is written on that Contribution page.

All that it says on the page I am look at is:-

To show their appreciation for great hospitality, guests can send an optional financial contribution to a host after completing a stay or an Airbnb Experience. You can choose to automatically allow or decline future contributions from guests.

Allow contributions

100% of all contributions will be deposited into your payout account, unless you have an account balance. Your payout is subject to the Payment Terms of Service. Please note that your contribution may not be tax-deductible or eligible for tax credits.

To learn more about guest contributions, visit the Help Centre.

Maybe there is something in the more detailed information.

I don’t know why you interpret “future contributions” to mean that it will only be sent to guests who have reservations in the future. It means it will be sent to past guests who will supposely contribute after receiving the contribution message in the future (i.e. whenever Airbnb sends them out). As I said, I will try to find the wording, which isn’t on the page you are seeing on your account.

Probably because of the word ‘future’ :grinning:

Anyway I’ve turned the option off.

Such a stupid initiative.

The word “future” describes the contributions, not the guests. Don’t make me diagram the sentence, lol.

If you follow the link in @Helsi’s post that is highlighted in blue and says “Help Centre”, I believe that’s where you saw the wording. I just looked and saw it there. I was surprised to read about the “cards” actually.

I am also noticing the other blue highlighted link for “Payment terms of service”. That’s where they tell you they are getting a cut (charging the service fee) on these “contributions”. And that’s exactly why they aren’t calling them “gratuities”. Dirty bastards

edit to add: actually it says that hosts will keep 100% of contributions. But, I’m still suspicious, lol.

Here is the wording that was posted on the CC by a host. She actually got it from a connection she has who works for Airbnb. I don’t know if it is posted like this on the site, or not- I haven’t found it there yet.

" How It Works

Eligible guests will receive an email from Airbnb letting them know they can now send cards to prior hosts to show their appreciation. If they choose to send a card, the guest will be shown a selection of prior hosts whom they’ve given five-star ratings. Next, they can choose a host, select a card design, and include an optional contribution, if they like.

You’ll get an email as soon as a guest sends you a card. Some cards will include a personal message from that guest and/or an optional financial contribution. Below the message, you’ll find some information about your hosting history with the guest. If you want to respond, select the Reply button in the email you received to send a message. You’re not required to respond.

If a guest includes a financial contribution with their card, it will be sent to the same payout method as the reservation. Please allow for processing time depending on your payout method. Once the funds have been posted to your account, we’ll send a second email to confirm the transaction is complete.

Managing Contributions

You can choose to automatically allow or decline all future contributions from guests. The default for receiving guest contributions is set to On . If you want to automatically decline to receive any future contributions:

  • In Account Settings, click or tap Payments and payouts
  • Under Guest contributions , set the toggle to Off

If you decline future contributions, any payments you’ve already received will remain in your payout account—they will not be returned to the guest."

@muddy Yes all of that comes up if you click the link for “help centre” in @Helsi’s post.

I checked many times. I think it’s an issue in Chrome because when I logged in via Safari it was turned off. :woman_shrugging:

Or is it? Will these guests, in future stays (if those ever happen), be reluctant now to give 5 stars because they will think they will then be asked to consider a “donation” to the host? 4 stars will guarantee no begging bowl. I feel like this scheme is poison to hosts.

I can’t imagine anyone would willingly submit an additional payment to someone. I’ve never received a donation of any type from anyone. I have donated to charities, but never to a “business owner” directly. In some ways, we are all in business, the business of staying afloat! The initiative seems kind of silly, but if someone wants to help me out, it is always appreciated.

Bloody thing keeps turning itself back on.

Will contact CS.

If, in the interim, someone is stupid enough to send us money it will go towards my anti CV19 medication.

Not holding breathe

I thought of that too, but more in the way of considering this contribution as a gratuity. Even in other businesses, like a hair salon, it’s been traditional to not tip the owner of the salon. I think that’s changed a lot and I know I do tip my hair stylist who now owns the salon (but didn’t when I started going to her).

I think this whole thing is kind of bizarre and can’t help but wonder where the hell it came from. Were there guests contacting Airbnb saying, “how can I help out my host from last month?”. Surely not. Were there hosts contacting Airbnb saying, “I really think my old guests would like to chip in right now if only they had a way”? Maybe, but there can’t be that many and they are surely bonkers.
