After spending a few hundred, on a handiman with special paint (and a 6 day drying process with windows open and constant fans running) to set the special paint- my clawfoot tub was ready for business. Looking peachy keen from the past owner who let it get stained … What do I do? Left a piece of ORANGE organic soap piece on tub and now the dye has stained in 2 spots, making things look dinghy again! I swore I’d never paint that tub again. Anyone have any ideas /luck with getting stains out of a tub!!! Baking soda scrubbing is not working…
Did you try spot painting it with white spray paint? Just spray a thin layer over the orange spots. Let try over night and repeat the process until the spot is no longer visible. If that doesn’t work, try placing those non skid rubber stickies over them and the add a few more so it’s not obvious that you’re trying to hide spots.
I am psychic today. Either that or behind the times. I started reading @Letsgo 's message and thought ‘baking soda’. Then I thought ‘non-slip decal thing’ and started reading @Ritz3 's…
Have you tried baking soda in conjunction with white vinegar? That tends to work well for me.
The possible problem with using spray paint that I see is that it
A. might not be the same shade of white and make it look worse.
B. as it was refinished with special paint that required days to dry, spray paint may not adhere properly.
Rather than trying to scrub it off, I would try various things that have been suggested- bleach, hydrogen peroxide, baking soda (and how about trying a Magic Eraser?) , but apply it and cover with a wet cloth, and leave it covering the stains overnight. Some things take awhile to work.
I’m the master of burning food, as I find cooking boring and wander off to do other things, forgetting about what’s on the stove. When I burn a pot, if I use Barkeeper’s Friend and try to scrub it off, it doesn’t really work. If I sprinkle the product into the pot and leave it overnight, it comes off easily the next morning.
Magic eraser!! That is a great idea!!! I am going to run out right now to buy one- they amaze me how they work! I have bsoda on hand and will pour peroxide over that too and leave over night as my first round trial.
Next, if that doesn’t work— some bleach try that… then the eraser.
Yes - while spray paint sounds like a good idea- the paint color and possible toxins- (you soak in it)… made me apprehensive.
that’s funny- i burn food /pots too -due to wandering off… I’m the master of putting eggs to boil, forgetting them- once lifted up the lid to an egg boiled dry and it literally shot up to the ceiling and exploded. lol…
Okay off to try this.
thanks everyone!
Oh can you buy non skid stickies separately, didn’t know that, will have to look into that? I thought my last resort is buying a whole sticky mat type thing but worried it would grab the enamel off and 2… grime would stick to it… not a fan of soaking in plastic matts either… but as a temp fix for showers it ain’t bad.
baking soda and white vinegar… hmm… I will put that on my list… too…
I can never remember the 2 simple house products you aren’t supposed to put together cause they can combust- one of the reasons I reached out for suggestions…
have to go out buy white vinegar anyway- as my haircutter said it makes a good hair rinse… in my quest to find more natural cleaning methods.
Thanks!!
Bleach and ammonia are a huge dangerous no-no to mix.
Vinegar is pretty benign and can be mixed with baking soda no problem. In fact, that combo is often recommended for clogged drains.
A friend of mine used to have a copper sink business. Her recommendation for cleaning them was baking soda and lemon juice.
Toothpaste and baking soda mixed is also pretty good for cleaning difficult marks/stains (think biro on the fridge door…). Plain bleach might work on the tub - when my daughter dyes her hair we end up with plenty of dye stains on the metal tub which shift with a dab of bleach or toilet cleaner on.
Took years for me to find out what “biro” means. Kept reading it in novels by Brits. They must think it’s a word every English speaker knows. Same with"Aga".
You mean it isn’t universal? for clarity - biro is ballpoint pen! But here in the UK I have to look up baking soda every time to make sure I get the right thing - we have baking powder or bicarbonate of soda and they are quite different products and I can never remember which equates to baking soda…
bicarbonate of soda = baking soda
baking powder = baking powder (which, to confuse matters more, has baking soda as one of the ingredients!).
Two countries divided by a common language…
And we haven’t even touched on Aussietalk.
same with the English use of “jumpers”??? I think a sweater? and chips.
little known fact… way off topic… if you shake and bake your chicken legs in baking POWDER - it puts this amazing crispy coating on it when it cooks… I didn’t believe it til I tried it.
Clawfoot tubs are gorgeous but a pain to maintain. Have you tried a magic eraser? Those things are surprisingly effective on stains.
You obviously didn’t bother to read through this thread- a magic eraser was already suggested and the OP said she was going to try it.
WHY? You must have no life besides cleaning.
No sain host will ever put such a tub in their rental.
Even a normal tub is already a cleaners hell, let alone a claw foot.
My advice, remove that tub a.s.a.p before you get a hosting burn-out.
I once made a terrible stain in a bath tub and had success using a paste that included cream of tartar and something else…perhaps baking soda?
