They can but it must be disclosed and discussed
And the rule is a bit grey about what happens to any recordings after a guest leaves
duplication…
Can you link to the information on their site which states that CCTV must be discussed with the guest and not used to ‘actively’ record guests?
Ellen did that already. Airbnb uses the word “disclose” not “discuss.”
The key here is that Airbnb is going to decide in favor of the guest more often than not. What is allowed and what is a good idea are not the same. In this case, Jon says he has disclosed the indoor cameras. However, the women who are sneaking around don’t seem to know he has them. If they realize it later, (why aren’t they visible?) or go back and re-read the listing and complain, my money is on Jon getting the shaft from Airbnb. What if the cameras aren’t disclosed in the rules but only elsewhere in the listing?
Really… who doesn’t think that Airbnb would side with the guest based on what we’ve seen posted here on the forum?
Agree… they always side with the guest more often than not.
It’s a bit of a tricky issue because Air’s wording is vague…and I would think to have all bases covered you disclose it a million ways… house rules, listing itself, guest info documents you send out. Make sure there is no doubt in their mind, just like I have to do with collecting taxes. People don’t read the listing but they do read the directions. Also, can anyone confirm… do they show you the house rules when you go to book, or is that just via IB. ??? I’ve never used Airbnb as a guest!
And that’s by design. It’s jut a matter of time until the cameras get used against Jon.
Yes they do but I can’t recall exactly the sequence. Of course I read the whole listing and look at all the pictures before I book.
Actually, Air uses the word “discuss” as it pertains to the guest who wants to use a surveillance device to monitor the host or others without the their consent. It’s not mandatory but Air “encourages” guests to “discuss” the use. Strange policy.
This is a hot subject now because there have been some hosts putting hidden cameras in bedrooms and bathrooms (CREEP!) Some were even Superhosts and had a long history of great reviews. Stories like this are bound to make people a bit paranoid and Airbnb err on the side of caution;
Another strange requirement is that the OP was required to inform the guests there was an active recording going on…which we know he didn’t do.
This is another recent article where a traveling nurse found a hidden camera.
https://nurse.org/articles/travel-nurse-finds-hidden-camera-in-airbnb-rental/
And that may be a good thing. There is no way for Airbnb to vet every host and every listing so guests have to be proactive.
I just realize this is huge. What if a guest wants to sabotage your Airbnb business and put a camera in the house saying it’s yours. Go prove it now!
Hi , Its all in the Airbnb website under terms . try google airbnb security cameras
I seriously doubt there is a Host on this forum who is not in breach of the AirBnb policy.
In regards to?
I can’t think of a policy I am breaching. But I do not have cameras.
Could you be more specific?
It HAS to be in the house rules. That is Airbnb’s rule. Anywhere else in the listing is not good enough, evidently.
I do not have Security Cameras but I can think of at least 5 devices I have that need to be declared according to ABB policy, probably not that unusual.
What the heck are you talking about??

I couldn’t find the terms you mentioned. That’s why I am asking you to link to them.
As others have said I could only see the term disclose when it comes to hosts .
Please could you copy and paste so we can see the actually phrasing you mention
“it also must be discussed and may not be used to actively record guests or hosts inside the home”
