Oh, good! I like your interpretation better! I hope you’re right.
Well, when somebody’s telling you something happened and you say, “I’ll need evidence” - it means you’re not taking their word for it.
Yep, without question. I’m even giving them some forgiveness by letting them stay here for their last night.
And somebody asked, I forget who. But my forgiveness will not extend to their review. It won’t be a scathing review, but I will mention this. It’s only right that other hosts should know what happened.
That’s how I read it, too. You already told Air you witnessed it.
His story while entertaining just made me cringe. I strongly dislike game playing of this kind. This is a business not a game and @JonYork behaved badly imho.
Kona, I personally don’t find his actions juvenile either. I think it’s funny and enjoyed his play by play story. I enjoy a good “make 'em sweat” game and this one was good.
While I laughed at the story, I do think there was a much better way to handle the situation, as this is not you child sneaking a friend in past curfew but a paying guest. Also, the interior camera is creepy AF.
I also would not trust Air Bnbs response that you can kick them out penalty free. We had a similar situation where we caught people smoking and violating our quiet hours, via exterior camera. I immediately reported to ABB and they said if I wanted to kick them out they would be refunded they nights they didn’t stay AND I could open a resolution center case to request the other nights payout. Total joke.
I think I might of missed a part here . If the Cameras are disclosed , why then did the girls act in they way they did when sneaking in the guy ? If they knew there were security cameras in the areas that access the living room and Kitchen area leading to the bedrooms ? Something is not only creepy AF and totally unprofessional but also may not be as legal as it sounds depending on which state you live and not just Airbnb rules .
I bet if the girls were aware that they were filmed , they would be screaming about it to
Airbnb Just how long is this film kept ? do you have full exclusive rights to it and can post it on Youtube
Sorry for the length of this
BTW here is Air’s policy
Rules for guests (also applies to hosts)
"If you’re a guest, our Standards & Expectations require that you not spy on other people, or otherwise violate others’ privacy. Our policy prohibits the use of a surveillance device by a guest to monitor a host or any third party present in the listing without the consent of that person. We encourage you to discuss the use of surveillance devices using Airbnb’s messaging feature.
Violating this policy may result in your suspension or removal from the Airbnb community. In addition, you should ensure that your use of surveillance equipment is consistent with applicable local laws and regulations. "
So sounds like the Girls had no Idea they were actively being monitored and that a discussion of interior security cameras never happened between the Host and Guest
If anything , just writing that you have security cameras in the Home is legal , but to use them to actively monitor a Guest or Host is not allowed !!
I agree. However when you say
Then that’s on them. Jon says the cameras are disclosed in the listing. If they are disclosed but “hidden” then that may be a violation. In any case these women don’t seem any too bright.
It might be a good idea for JY to list the camera in his house rules and in his guest info document as well, just so there is no doubt, although Air does say have the conversation via the message thread, that way the disclosure and agreement of it can be verified.
It does sound ODD the girl snuck in, knowing full well they were being recorded.
I think having indoor cameras is just asking for trouble. I think JY really dodged a bullet that these guests didn’t make a bigger fuss to AirBNB.
She may have thought at night the camera could not catch anything.
Just so you know…
I had a guest complaining that I had an indoor camera, even though I didn’t - it was the motion sensor of the house alarm, and Airbnb emailing me telling me my listing is SUSPENDED until we figure out what happened there.
That was messed up. I had to describe to them the sensor and convince them it’s not a camera but something way different. Eventually they believed me and 24 hours later I was back in business.
Make sure it’s in the House Rules as well as the House Manual so you don’t get suspended.
As @azreala said, having indoor cameras could easily cause more trouble than they are worth. All the guest has to do is say “I was uncomfortable, dude was a creeper” and a bunch of other unverifiable crap and the listing is suspended and the guest is refunded.
But in your case the problem was that the camera wasn’t disclosed in your listing, right? Not the existence of the “camera.”
I think as long as you disclose it 12 different ways and get the guest to agree that they acknowledge it you will be covered. Just like I do with accommodAtions taxes. If they still claim they knew nothing about it, then I know they didn’t read my listing at all.
I’m sure JYs guests had no idea they were even seen on camera bringing in their guy. I still wonder what on earth they were up to that made doing that worth while.
According to Airbnb policy
It not only must be disclosed in the house rules it also must be discussed and may not be used to actively record guests or hosts inside the home . Dollars to Donuts those girls didn’t know that they were being recorded at any time what happens if they forgot about the cameras and happen to be dressed in not much if they walked into the LV
If they thought nobody else was home . Not to mention that the owner now has naked footage of guests !
Ok, I don’t understand. If you are not using a camera to record then why do you have one?
Did I miss something? Where did it say they were naked?
I think the point is putting a camera indoors, in a common area is just asking for issues, even if disclosed.
If we had interior cameras I would make guests acknowledge them via Air BNB message prior to arrival. As well as outline exactly what they do video/sound/night vision etc. It is just SO risky to have a guest not ‘realize’ and report you to Air, disclosed or not.
Hosts are permitted to have cameras inside the listings with the exception of places where people can reasonably expect privacy (bathrooms and bedrooms).
