Airbnb’s promise of financial help

I received a payment to my PayPal account last night (4/28) There was no email from AirBNB so I have no calculation / reconciliation to validate. Later today I’ll try to back in to their accounting.

I never received anything and am not expecting to even though I have been a super host for five years and Airbnb is my sole income. I did, however, at my son the accountant’s suggestion, apply for the payroll protection plan based on my 1099 from that income. I received the funding yesterday, only because I applied at 12:01 am on the first day. They put me on the queue after the first round and funded me the second. Game changer.

To my surprise, I received an invitation for the fund today. Although I am not expecting much if anything at all, it was nice to sort of be recognized I guess.

Also: Don’t worry, everyone. There are still two more weeks for them to send out additional invitations.

Best of luck

I received notice just a day or so ago saying money is on its way. When I looked over the 3 bookings that qualified ( 2 originally were non-refundable and one cancelled 2 days prior which meant it was non-refundable) I noticed discrepancies with the amounts they said would be coming to me.
After corresponding with Airbnb I found out some major things I didn’t expect. The larger booking was $1000 and because the guests only paid 50% up front, I was only given 25% on half of what was lost. Also, Airbnb took their fees out of the bottom line. So when all was said I am due only $137.26 for this booking.
I had every booking for March 15 - the end of April cancelled and originally my calendar was totally booked. I so wish that I had the non-cancellation policy in place on all my bookings, because then I would at least recoup a tidy sum compared to what I will get now. I understand that Airbnb is not required to give us anything, but knowing how things turned out I am kicking myself for the cancellation policy I had in place.

@Romy I think the guest paying only 50% up front had nothing to do with the payout you received, and if that’s what the CS rep told you, they gave you incorrect info. You would have received the same payout for that reservation if the guest had paid all up front.
You were due 50% of the total reservation if the guest had cancelled under normal circumstances- the 25% they are paying out is 25% of what you would have received if your policy had been upheld. You would have normally received 50%= $500. 25% of $500 minus the 3% service fee is the $137 you received.

I was told that figure as well as Airbnb Support sent me a message stating “the host support program is based on the initial payment processed by the guest upon booking the reservation”. The total based on the original amount 25% comes to $242, minus the 3% fee (based on $242 is $7.26) so payout should’ve been $234.74. Both my other 2 qualified bookings only took 3% off the same way. Even if they did take the 3% off the original price I still would have received $213.

According to Airbnb support text “Your guest chose paidless upfront option which is making their initial payment 50% of the total amount. Host support program is based on the initial payment processed by the guest upon booking the reservation.”

I’m saying that the message you received from support was incorrect information. The 25% they stated is not 25% of the total reservation amount you would have received if the booking had actually taken place. The 25% is 25% of what you would have received if your cancellation policy had been upheld. This has been true for all hosts who have received the 25%. The 25% is actually 12.5% of the total reservation.
You said the reservation was for $1000. The amount you would have received if Airbnb hadn’t refunded 100% to the guest would have been $500 (50% for a normal cancellation under a strict policy). 25% of $500 minus the 3% service fee is $137.26.
It has zero to do with your guest paying only 50% upfront. Even if the guest had paid the entire $1000 up front, you still woud have only received $137.26. The message the CS rep sent you was wrong.

It would not be hard to just scrub for externally-linked calendars and block anyone on VRBO, Home Away, TripAdvisor, etc.

I’ll be out of the running although I tick every metric and do send $20-$40K in bookings through AirBnB every year since 2016 between my two homes.

It would be nice to get this grant. I’ve applied for PUA, EIDL, PPP and had $0 so far even though applied in March through April 2nd for these programs and AirBnB/VRBO are my primary income.
